Tatsuki Fujimoto’s Look Back one-shot has been gaining a lot of attention lately, with its theatrical adaptation coming on June 28, 2024 along with its first trailer and key visual revealed today!

Film director Kiyotaka Oshiyama shares his thoughts on the work and describes what it means to him.

He states that he is glad to be in charge of a piece of media he could deeply relate to, as he was moved while reading the one-shot.

“When I read the manga, I was deeply moved by the story, and of course I resonated with Fujimoto-sensei, who came up with the idea for Look Back. So I felt that I could make a film that I could honestly relate to on a personal level.”

But what’s more interesting is that he wants to make the movie a little different from the manga but does not elaborate on details.

However, there is little evidence to suggest that he’s going to change the story entirely or even parts of it but given the following words, it probably means he’s going to give readers a different experience by fully utilizing the medium of animation.

Because after stating he wanted to make the movie a little different, he thinks that there is stuff only an animator can do.

“I am grateful to Fujimoto-sensei, the monster manga artist, who kindly lent me his original work, and I am aiming to create a film that is a little different from the manga, thinking that there are things I can draw only because I am an artist who has lived in the world of animation expression.”

Kiyotaka Oshiyama has worked on Chainsaw Man anime as the Devil Designer and was also involved in other notable projects like Devilman Crybaby, Doraemon, Gurren Lagan, Space Dandy, Evangelion 2.0, The First Slam Dunk film and Penguin Highway.

About Look Back:

Look Back is a Japanese one-shot web manga written and illustrated by Tatsuki Fujimoto. It was published on Shueisha’s Shōnen Jump+ in July 2021.

The anime film adaptation was first announced on Feb 13, 2024.

Viz Media publishes the English version of the Look Back manga and describes it as:

The overly confident Fujino and the shut-in Kyomoto couldn’t be more different, but a love of drawing manga brings these two small-town girls together. A poignant story of growing up and moving forward that only Tatsuki Fujimoto, the creator of Chainsaw Man, could have crafted.
