The anime adaptation is based on the light novel The Strongest Magician in the Demon Lord’s Army Was a Human, written by Ryosuke Hata and illustrated by KUMA.
It began publishing in Futabasha’s Monster Bunko imprint from September 30, 2016 to April 27, 2018.
The light novel collected five volumes during its run.
On July 12, 2019, Futabasha’s Gaugau Monster magazine began adapting the series into manga, illustrated by Anajiro.
To date, the manga has collected 10 volumes.
Upon release, Crunchyroll will stream the anime and describe it as:
