Goku’s Voice Actor Masako Nozawa Reacts To Akira Toriyama’s Death
As soon as the news came out, Nozawa refused to comment in order to compose herself but later shared her most memorable Toriyama statement.
Masako Nozawa is Goku and Goku is Masako Nozawa. She has played the character since 1986, right from the original Dragon Ball. Toriyama personally picked her to play Goku and actually imagines her voice in his head while writing dialogue for Goku.
So you can imagine how much of an impact Toriyama’s death would have on Nozawa.
As soon as the news came out, Nozawa refused to comment in order to compose herself. Later on that day (Mar 8, 2024), she gathered her wits to share her most memorable statement from Toriyama to her. Take a look:
“I don’t want to believe it. My head is completely empty, save for the feeling of not even wanting to think about it. Still, when I remember that every time we met, he would always say to me: “I’m leaving Goku in your hands, okay?” I feel that I could be by Goku’s side until the end of my days. Sensei, please watch over us from up there in the sky. May you make a peaceful departure.”

Goku happens to be in possession of a dragon ball, but unfortunately for Bulma, he refuses to part ways with it, so she makes him a deal: he can tag along on her journey if he lets her borrow the dragon ball’s power.
With that, the two set off on the journey of a lifetime.
