Anime Studios Are Going To Become Bankrupt Soon, According To Jujutsu Kaisen 0 Chief Animation Director

Terumi Nishii, the Chief Animation Director for the Jujutsu Kaisen 0 movie recently tweeted about the grim fate of many animation studios in the next few years. According to Nishii, fans should expect anime studios to start announcing bankruptcies soon.

Nishii said in a post on Twitter, “In the future, the capacity of each company will be completely exhausted. We expect to see more and more bankruptcies due to the fact that a production scheduled for 3 years from now will be finished in 5 years, but the budget has been spent on another production😋. I wonder how many animators will be able to survive at that time. The careless ones will be cut off. Let’s all study up!”

Numerous figures in the industry agree with Nishii. The anime budgets are a problem because the production of an anime generally begins three years before it starts to air.

As the main animation takes place at the later stages of production, numerous retakes due to reasons like low levels of skill lead to additional costs.

If studios cannot account for this loss well, many projects will suffer budget cuts, and eventually leading to bankruptcy.

In the thread, Nishii also talks about NAFCA’s upcoming book for an Animators Skill Certification. According to Nishii, a major reason for the decline in the animation industry is because of a decline in the newer generation’s skills.

She has also voiced against hiring animators from social media, calling it cheap labor, and explaining that they won’t be given the time or place to improve.

NAFCA plans to introduce a certification for animators, hoping to standardize skills and allow both employers and employees to find what they’re looking for.
