One Piece: Who is Atlas? Did Atlas Die?
Atlas, also known as Punk-05, is unlike any other character introduced so far
In the vast world of One Piece, where pirates chase dreams and devil fruits grant extraordinary powers, Dr. Vegapunk stands as a beacon of scientific innovation. Shrouded in secrecy, Vegapunk’s work is facilitated by his six “Satellites,” each representing a distinct aspect. Among them is Atlas, a character whose introduction sparked confusion and, unfortunately, a misconception about her fate.
So, let’s take a look at the Vegapunk!
Who is Atlas in One Piece?
Atlas, also known as Punk-05, is unlike any other character introduced so far. Debuting in Chapter 1062, “Adventure in the Land of Science,” Atlas isn’t a person, but a unique creation. Imagine a fluffy, atom-shaped being with Dr. Vegapunk’s genius packed inside.
This adorable contradiction piques the audience’s interest, leaving them wanting to know more about its function and purpose.
Despite its unassuming appearance, Atlas is designated as “Punk-05,” implying a specific role within the scientist’s team. There’s a theory that the numbers assigned to the Satellites might correspond to their area of expertise. While some believe Atlas embodies “wrath” due to its association with the mythological Titan who carried the world on his shoulders, its true nature remains a mystery.
The biggest question mark surrounding Atlas is its function. Unlike other Satellites with defined roles, Atlas’s purpose is shrouded in ambiguity. During its introduction, Atlas declares, “Running amok is my job!” This peculiar statement hints at a stress-relieving mechanism for the other Vegapunks. Perhaps Atlas absorbs the collective mental strain of the group, channeling it into harmless (or maybe playful) bursts of energy. This would explain the islanders’ fondness for Atlas despite its “rampaging” tendencies.
Adding to the intrigue is a potential inconsistency in Atlas’s designation. In some panels, it’s labeled as “Punk-06,” sparking speculation about a potential error or a deeper meaning. Could the numbers be interchangeable, or is there a hidden hierarchy among the Satellites? Only time and future chapters will reveal the truth.
One Piece is known for its humorous moments, and Atlas perfectly embodies that spirit. Its childlike appearance combined with its role as a stress reliever injects a dose of lightheartedness into the often-serious world of scientific exploration. This charming juxtaposition makes Atlas a memorable addition to the Vegapunk mythos.
Did Atlas Die in One Piece?
Yes, Atlas sacrificed itself to help the Straw Hat Crew escape Vegapunk’s Island.
In chapter 1120 of the manga, in the Labo Phase, Zoro and Jinbe are on the Thousand Sunny. Nusjuro was blown far away but is making his way back. Lilith stops the Straw Hat crew from taking off, warning that if Nusjuro attacks midair, the ship’s speed will drop, and they won’t reach the sea.
Suddenly, Atlas appears and punches Lilith, knocking her unconscious. Atlas turns off a device on Lilith’s head, and York notes that only Atlas remains.
Atlas, now determined, tells Nami and the others, “Please, take care of Lilith. I will eliminate your obstacle!!” As Nusjuro rushes back, Atlas flies and grabs him, even as he slices off one of her arms. Using her “DOM Shoes” and jet pack, Atlas pushes Nusjuro out of the way, allowing the Thousand Sunny to take off using the “Coup de Burst.”
On Egghead shore, Emeth excitedly greets Luffy, calling him Joy Boy. Luffy, confused, looks around, but Emeth insists, “I am talking to you!! Your enemy is my enemy. I’m glad to be able to fight for you again, Joy Boy!!” Luffy is amazed that Emeth can talk, and Emeth vows to protect Joy Boy.
As the Thousand Sunny flies towards the sea, nearing an Elbaf ship, Usopp and Chopper cry for Atlas. “We can reach the sea!!” the Straw Hat Pirates cheer. York, observing the chaos, tells the Five Elders that Atlas’ signal has disappeared.
