Naruto has maintained an iconic status as one of the most famous and beloved manga and anime franchises of all time.  Naruto author Masashi Kishimoto continues working as writer and supervisor of the Boruto manga, even into its sequel “Two Blue Vortex”, with Mikio Ikemoto as artist. However, fans continue to wonder when Kishimoto will make another solo outing.

In the main press conference for the signing event in France, Kishimoto brings up the possibility that he might be working on something else.

Question: Mr. Kishimoto, your first fans now have children and you are considered a Hokage of the manga industry. So what is your new dream now?

Kishimoto: It’s a difficult question. I think I have a goal, but the most important thing is to spend time with my family. I love the moments with the fans, I want to have a little more. I think that in these moments I find motivation and will for a new work.

Ikemoto: In order to continue Boruto, Naruto has such an important presence that Boruto is finally able to be a main character. Will he be able to equal Naruto? It all depends on you, the readers, I count on you for the sequel!

Although a vague tease from Kishimoto, this remark garnered a lot of attention from the fanbase. What is clear from this statement is that Kishimoto is finding motivation for a new work, rather than a new work itself being confirmed.

It is also not known if this new work will follow up on the Naruto or Boruto storyline, be a new manga or even follow up on Samurai 8.

This is not the first time Kishimoto planned a new work after the end of the Naruto franchise.

Last July 31, 2023, Kishimoto dropped the one-shot titled, “Naruto Gaiden: Whirlwind in the Vortex”, a prequel starring Naruto’s father Minato Namikaze before he became Fourth Hokage. Minato was the winner of the NARUTOP99 poll, where fans decided on one character who would be given a one-shot story.

However, Kishimoto had already worked on a serialized manga long before the Minato one-shot while Boruto was being written. In May 2019, Kishimoto released a new manga, “Samurai 8: The Tale of Hachimaru”, which takes place in a galaxy with samurai. However, this manga would stop serialization in March 2020 after only 5 volumes due to poor sales. As an example, Samurai 8 volume 3 sold only less than 10,000 copies within 2 days of release.

Some fans have expressed a concern that this would repeat history.

If there is any official word of a sequel, Shueisha would be the first to post an update

During the interview, Kishimoto and Ikemoto have discussed their differing approaches to the Naruto and Boruto series, among other topics.

The story of Boruto continues with Boruto: Two Blue Vortex, serializing beginning October 2023, and currently has 13 chapters as of writing.
