The Mother of All Weapon Devils! Chainsaw Man Chapter 176 Review

Can Yoru’s trump cards be enough to stop Chainsaw Man before the world ends?

In the previous chapter, the world is silent and Yoru loses her arms to Pochita

“The guiltier you feel about creating a weapon, the more powerful it will become.”  (Yoru, Chapter 101)

In one chapter, we see added depth to the War Devil and a look at her relationship to the Weapon Devils that fans might have noticed for some time.

Chapter 176 is titled, “Two Children”.

The chapter begins in a flashback prior to Denji becoming Chainsaw Man with Asa and Yoru together in the bathtub. Yoru demonstrates her powers by turning soap into a sword but noting that this will never be enough to defeat Chainsaw Man.

Asa states that she can make her apartment into a weapon without invoking a name but Yoru explains that they can make weapons without a name or touching the object for conversion.

Asa brings up the fake Chainsaw Men attacks and reflects on how the fear of Chainsaw Man increases fear of war and the War Devil herself.

This does make Yoru powerful but there is more to it than that.

Asa suggests that they bury the hatchet as Denji’s defeat would not give Yoru any real satisfaction.

After all, people are still afraid of war but Asa wants something from Chainsaw Man.

Yoru reveals that Chainsaw Man devoured her comrades, the other Weapon Devils and that she has two Weapon Devils capable of defeating Pochita.

Yoru dismisses Asa’s sacrifices (her home and college fund) but is conflicted over using Weapon Devils to save them.

In Page 5 and here in Page 8, Fujimoto expertly conveys the level of hesitation Yoru faces with three panels of Yoru’s face moving down.

The Page 5 face panels convey the changing “priority” in Yoru’s goals, from a desire to defeat Chainsaw Man to a longing for her comrades.

However, in Page 8 towards 9, we see that Yoru returns to her old objective, pride.

She is willing to sacrifice her two children to achieve her prideful ambition of winning against Chainsaw Man, who humiliated her and stole part of her.

To the present, the mouthless and armless Yoru realizes that she is indeed willing to even turn her two children into empty, mindless weapons, just for that goal.

This reminds me of Thanos, who loved his daughter Gamora sincerely, yet willfully sacrifices her. Thanos’ love is warped by his stalwart ideology and maddening ego, which could be the same for Yoru as far as we can tell here.

Following this similarity, considering that Devils are made from human fear rather than through reproduction by other Devils, it is likely that Yoru treats the Weapon Devils as family rather than biologically being their mother.

Now we learn who her two children are: the Gun Devil and the Tank Devil.

We have never seen the Tank Devil until this point but the Gun Devil was the bane of Chainsaw Man Part 1, the most feared devil of the age before Makima’s rise and fall.

The Containment Facility in the Gulf of Mexico stores the tank devil while Mount Elbrus in Russia stores 28% of the remnants of the Gun Devil. The two break out due to the force of Yoru’s summons, it seems.

In Part 1, the early plot revolved around retrieving the flesh of the Gun Devil, usually in the form of metal fragments, bullets and other gun parts.

With one shot from her finger, Yoru cuts Chainsaw Man’s right arm, changing the playing field.

Yoru’s two children turn into gauntlets and she manages to get the Mouth Devil out of Pochita’s body, which in turn restores Yoru’s mouth and the world (and the Chainsaw Man) can talk again.
