Is Power Coming Back? Chainsaw Man Chapter 177 Review

Yoru Chainsaw Man USA
CHAINSAW MAN © 2018 Tatsuki Fujimoto, Shueisha

In the previous Chainsaw Man chapter, we learn that Asa treats the Weapon Devils as family but she is willing to sacrifice her two children, Gun and Tank, to defeat Chainsaw Man.

Chapter 177 is titled, “Trigger Finger”

Classic Fujimoto.

First page and we already have trauma from Yoru’s evil sister with that finger gun and “Bang!”

This is quite the setup for the chapter’s concept and it is so simple.

Having the power of the Gun Devil allows Yoru to release bullets with the power to go through a line of humans and buildings, hence why Yoru’s bullets had the power to push Black Chainsaw Man through

While wondering if Fami is right about killing Black Chainsaw Man being the only way to make Denji a normal human, Asa reflects on Yoru’s motivations and here we see that Yoru views children as the property of their parents.

This does goes back to my MCU Thanos analogy in the Chapter 176 review.

More relevant to Chainsaw Man is how Devils do share a complex spectrum of emotions like the humans that made them, including a utilitarian philosophy in families that still persists to this day.

In many cultures, family members owe a debt of gratitude for being fed by their parents and parents in turn expect children to inherit what they have and reflect their legacy, such that any stain on their honor would be an attack on a parent’s pride and sense of place.

As one of the four Horsemen, Yoru might have some semblance of sway or authority among the Devils and with the Weapon Devils, it is likely that they are her personal force, possibly even a family as she considers Gun and Tank Devils the ones who best represent the terror of war.

This speaks of pride and at the same time reflects Yoru’s belief that because children are the reflection and mirror image of their parents, the parents are the ones who decide their fate.

Yoru’s willingness to sacrifice Gun and Tank certainly creates an element of loss for Yoru as without the individuals themselves around her, she would have less manpower.

However, as established in Chapter 101, guilt makes a weapon stronger, which means that Yoru being able to invoke Gun Devil’s full power (assuming from our observations) reflects Yoru’s guilt in using her children and never giving them their individuality.

Seeing Chainsaw Man atop a building, Yoru expresses her joy in putting Chainsaw Man in his place, feeling satisfaction in reminding the Hero of Hell of his rage against the War Devil.

Chainsaw Man suddenly spots a girl holding up a sign for a blood drive, his appearance scaring her off.

The words “Give Blood” with a heart sign below were highlighted as the Devil picks it up and mutters incoherently the words the girl said earlier.

This evokes quite the emotion.

Power’s loss left a significant hole in Denji’s heart, such that the time he spent with Asa in Chapter 116 somewhat reminded him of his lost friend.

While Black Chainsaw Man is seemingly driven by bloodlust and mindless carnage, Denji is still inside, subconsciously missing Power just from seeing a simple sign.

Might this indicate the possibility of restoring Power in some way?

In Chapter 91, Power made Denji form a contract, promising to find the Blood Devil and restore their friendship.

Maybe Black Chainsaw Man might have the means of restoring Power through the reborn Blood Devil but we still do not know where that being is.

And will we find out now that we see Yoru fight Chainsaw Man?

Suddenly, people across the United States lose their index fingers.

It means that the citizens of the United States might have made a contract with the Gun Devil to maintain their constitutional right to use firearms.

It seems that to summon more of the Gun Devil’s power, Yoru would sacrifice the index fingers of those who have made contracts with the Gun Devil to allow them to use guns and the American National Pistol Association to continue existing.

By disabling those with the contracts, the Gun Devil steals their ability to use guns to charge a powerful shot that would guarantee Black Chainsaw Man’s death.

Yoru strikes an iconic pose, mimicking the Statue of Liberty.

If you think about it, it is fitting that the War Devil is the mother of Gun and Tank devil, with the Gun being representative of the United States’ power and problems.

As Yoru prepares to point her finger, the face of the Statue of Liberty cracks.

Considering that the Gun Devil was able to kill thousands and destroy cities with just a few shots of its bullets, Yoru having the trigger fingers of 15% or 400,000 out of 3.5 million American gun users indicates that the same amount of firepower is being unleashed upon not just Chainsaw Man but all of Japan and any nearby area.

Alternatively, an easier explanation is that Yoru might be summoning another Weapon Devil to her side, given that there is a crack, just like when Tank and Gun were forced out of their containment facilities.

But Yoru was able to grab Tank and Gun without any sacrifice.

It’s strange that it would require the sacrifice of 15% of America’s trigger fingers, which normally would be a consequence of a devil contract.

Like Makima, Yoru invokes her contracts to fight Chainsaw Man as the contracts with humans o9ffer mutual benefits for both parties and not just some snack for the devils.

Chainsaw Man Chapter 178 will be released on September 24, 2024.
