Jujutsu Kaisen Volume 28 Reveals SHOCKING Details About One of Its Antagonists

Uraume’s gender has been a hot topic among the Jujutsu Kaisen fanbase and now Gege Akutami has a solid answer.

Ever since Uraume’s first appearance, their gender has been disputed by the fandom but now Gege Akutami finally has a straightforward answer in Jujutsu Kaisen Volume 28 extra:

“As for Uraume, he was originally a man, but due to contract with Kenjaku, he has reincarnated in a female body (Himi Shiori)… Did I mention this somewhere else before?”

This confirms what some of the fanbase had suspected for some time, that the original Uraume was born biologically male.

Akutami has mentioned in the Volume 25 Extras that Uraume was incarnate in a female body before but never specified their biological sex until now.

However, this does not confirm whether or not Uraume is a transwoman, as the line “due to a contract with Kenjaku” opens up more questions.

There might be more details revealed about their past in the remaining two volumes but given the wording of this statement, it could indicate that Uraume desired to be reincarnated female but this aspect of the binding vow has not explicitly been stated or confirmed.

The Name of Culling Game Players

Akutami brings up how some Incarnated Culling Game Players were confused by the way they were being referred to, saying:

“I meant to mention this in volume 27, but I ended up in the hospital and missed my chance. The Culling Game Players take on the names of the individuals whose bodies they’ve incarnated into. This is because it’s the bodies, not the cursed objects, that bear the curse of the Culling Game. That’s why when Hazenoki was weirded out when Kenjaku didn’t call him by his name (assuming that IS his real name). It was weird to him,  like, “Don’t you know my name?”

This explains why the names of the Culling Game players are based on the Vessels, such as Megumi for Sukuna, Suguru Geto for Kenjaku, Tsumiki Fushiguro for Yorozu, and Hana Kurisu for the Angel (albeit both share a symbiotic bond).

This could mean that Uraume is addressed as Himi Shiori.

However, this does not seem to apply to players such as Hajime Kashimo, as he is referred to as his original name instead of his vessel.

Since the body of the bearer of the cursed objects is marked by the curse of the Culling Game and not the objects (the souls of the reincarnated), it means the Kogane and the Culling Game system will only identify the player by that body, as marked according to the means of producing the Game itself.

So when Hazenoki was called out by Kenjaku, the latter meant it without regard for the person he was really talking to because Kenjaku already knew Hazenoki’s real name from when he was alive.

It seems to be that the Kogane are programmed in some way to filter out which players are to be referred to by their vessel’s name or by their original names.

Yorozu did not incarnate until much later but her will dominated Tsumiki’s body as soon as she was awakened.

There is also the possibility that Kashimo may not be the man’s name but that of his vessel and Kashimo does use this name in Chapter 186, indicating he adapted to the body he was in or they shared a similar name, which could explain why the body was compatible as a Vessel.

Alternatively, Kashimo and possibly other sorcerers are given some sort of preferential treatment when it comes to their identification in the Culling Game system, which could be possible with Kenjaku’s skill level but there might be

This could explain sorcerers like Dhruv Lakdawalla, who was a Japanese person from the Yayoi period (1000 BCE to 300 CE) that bore an Indian or South Asian name a thousand years before Japan made contact with India, or Reggie Star, an ancient sorcerer with a Western-sounding name.

Sukuna Stalling Reincarnation

Akutami revealed that Sukuna needed to fully transform into his original Heian form, which, as mentioned in Chapter 237, was meant to repair his flesh completely without using up a large amount of cursed energy to produce positive energy for the Reverse Cursed Technique.

The method of restoring the body by resuming the transformation caused by Sukuna’s incarnation was essential for starting the second round with the Jujutsu High members. But then the question arose, “What about Yorozu?”

The answer is, ‘Yorozu did not suspend the transformation from the incarnation but rather refused it and ended it.’ This way, the difference in skill level also comes into light, which is cool, right?! I was really excited to include this in Volume 27 extras!! But during the production period for Volume 27, I was struck by some strange symptoms, went through various twists and turns, and ended up getting my appendix (to be precise, it was the vermiform appendix) removed—my first surgery and hospitalization in my life. And that’s how I missed my chance to say it.”

This meant that every Incarnation is assumed to have always fully incarnated without having direct control over the process.

This could yet be another example of Sukuna’s unique biology at play as well or his precise cursed energy control allowing him to maintain his Megumi form for longer periods.

One question is, assuming that he did not lose Agito and Mahoraga, if Sukuna in his Heian form and while possessing Megumi would still have the Ten Shadows technique stored in his brain.

If so, does incarnation also alter the brain structure in some capacity?

Anime Inspires Manga

The Sukuna raid seems to be heavily drawn from the anime, particularly Season 2’s adaptation of the Shibuya Incident, as Akutami notes:

The battle between the Jujutsu High members and Sukuna was heavily influenced by the Jujutsu Kaisen anime. When the anime adaptation (visualization) happens, they rework the direction based on the manga, and even as the original author, I sometimes find myself thinking, ‘Whoa, this is awesome!’, ‘You can use this technique in this way too…..’—it’s like I was moved by something that’s been reverse imported.

This and other earlier aspects of the anime could have also inspired the airwalk ability of the sorcerers starting with the middle of the Culling Game.

Usami

In Chapter 253, it was revealed that there was one other Grade 1 sorcerer besides Kusakabe, Mei-mei, Todo, Yaga, and Nanami and it is Usami.

From the various reactions of the other high-grade sorcerers, it is suggested that Usami is tied to Jujutsu Headquarters and not the sort to ally with the capitalistic Mei-mei or the disobedient Satoro Gojo, both of whom do not hold him in any regard whatsoever.

Kusakabe does not view Usami as deserving of his place as Grade 1 as himself as well.
