Doraemon Voice Actress Passed Away

We have lost one of the most iconic voices in anime history. May she rest in peace.

On October 11, 2024, it was announced that voice actress Nobuyo Ōyama has passed away on September 29, 2024 at the age of 90 due to old age.

Born in Tokyo in 1933, Oyama was the third voice actress for the eponymous protagonist of Doraemon from 1979 to 2005, performing in a total of 1787 episodes and 30 specials.

She is also famous for her role as Monokuma, the mascot and villain of the Danganronpa series.

In 2015, Oyama was reported be suffering from dementia and had to undergo retirement.

Kōsei Tomita was the original voice of Doraemon for the first half of the original 26-episode 1973 Doraemon TV series

Masako Nozawa, better known for her work as the voice of Goku and Gohan in Dragon Ball, was the voice actress for the second half of the 1973 series and 1976 series.

Wasabi Mizuta would take over from Oyama in the 2005 series, which is still ongoing.

Doraemon is a manga written by the mangaka duo Fujiko F. Fujio (Hiroshi Fujimoto and Motoo Abiko) beginning in 1969 and ending in 1997 for Shogakukan

The manga has been adapted into multiple anime television shows since 1973.

The current rendition in 2005 is ongoing with 832 episodes as of 2024.

In 2008, Japan’s Foreign Ministry appointed Doraemon as Japan’s “anime ambassador”, showing Doraemon’s universal recognition.
