In the previous Kagurabachi, Chihiro defeats Hiruhiko with a spectacular finishing move.

Chapter 54 is titled, “Friendship”

This chapter has 19 pages

The chapter begins with a meeting among the Hishaku.

We see a cut of a forest and some birds but the area they are on looks like a playground or park, as shown by the horse ride.

The leader, Yura, explains that they now have a general idea of the Kamunabi’s plans.

Yura brings up Chihiro as an alien element that has added much power to the defense of the former Enchanted Blade Wielders.

However, what the Hishaku do not know is the whereabouts of Shiba Tougo, who is considered one of the most powerful sorcerers alive.

As such, Yura notes that it was not easy trying to outwit him 3 years ago, indicating that getting past Shiba was the reason the Hishaku were able to find and kill Kunishige Rokuhira.

Yura also notes that since Tokyo’s headquarters is where they kept the “Sword Saint” (wielder of Magatsumi or Shinuchi), an Enchanted Blade is the bare minimum needed to destroy the stronghold.

A new Hishaku member (Let’s call him “Jean Guy”) worries about giving Hiruhiko the task of killing the former wielders, given it is a necessary prerequisite to even use an Enchanted Blade.

Yura is nonchalant about letting the childish Hiruhiko take care of the wielders and checks his flip phone, learning

This indicates that this conversation has taken place at the start of the current arc.

As it turns out, Yura is riding on the spring horse in the playground.

There is a lot to read from this.

His nonchalant behavior towards literally everything might be a sign of an unchallenged superiority but it could also be a reflection of

The focus on the toy horse’s one-dimensional face could also represent the type of man he is, single-minded and unmoved by anything else going around him.

Yura receives a text message from Hiruhiko, which reads:

“From: Hiruhiko”

“Topic: Playing around!”

I’m gonna play with Rokuhira Chihiro a little bit :-;

I already confirmed it, Uruha’s heading towards the temple

Yura tells says that he is moving the soldiers as intended and could be a good opportunity, leaving Jean Guy confused.

“He” here could be Hiruhiko since Yura’s train of thought might be connected to Hiruhiko’s text message.

Yura assures Jean Guy that Hiruhiko’s battle talent is a treasure and that even if he is not as powerful as the other Hishaku,Hiruhiko’s control over his sorcery is precise enough to defeat Chihiro in particular.

This could be in reference to how Hiruhiko uses his powers to take hostages.

However, Yura does admit that Hiruhiko is still immature and would benefit from having a little back and forth with Chihiro before even trying to have his own Enchanted Blade.

Jena Guy worries if Hiruhiko loses but Yura assures him that whatever the outcome, they have some backup plans and their “trump card”.

Yura concludes his discussion, saying that he wants every Hishaku member to experience the failure, the defeat, and even the thoughts of their enemies.

Back to Chihiro vs. Hiruhiko, Chihiro interrogates Hiruhiko, the latter struggling to breathe as his two arms have been scattered across the theater seats.

Hiruhiko notices that after Chihiro got hit by his cranes, everything faded to black with Chihiro’s Kuro and so he asks Chihiro what he did.

Chihiro explained that Hiruhiko was able to read his position through the paper covering Chihiro’s field of vision.

To get to Hiruhiko’s position, Chihiro adapted and darkened the area with his goldfish to rob Hiruhiko of vision.

Hiruhiko then asks why Chihiro still tanked the cranes.

Chihiro explains that the reason why he did not use Kuro immediately was because he noticed that the paper around the theater hall did not turn into cranes right away, which meant that they needed to confirm if the paper cranes need to be folded by hand or not.

Therefore, Chihiro needed to make sure that Hiruhiko did not have any cranes set against someone else before he could unleash Kuro to darken Hiruhiko’s vision and attack him, while also taking on Hiruhiko’s cranes.

Hiruhiko is shocked that Chihiro is willing to go that far so that not a single civilian gets hurt.

Hiruhiko is confused because he thought only the two of them exist in his little world of violence.

Chihiro points out that nothing else matters as long as the civilians get out safely and although they are “the same”, he is willing to deny his actions.

What surprises Hiruhiko is that Chihiro really is genuinely someone who lives to kill just like him.

To Hiruhiko, all killing is the same but for Chihiro, not all killing is the same because that would deny the guilt felt by his “heroes”, namely Samura and his father Kunishige.

Not wanting to be alone in the world, Hiruhiko insists that because they are out to kill each other, they are the same but Chihiro corrects him, saying that because they want to get rid of the other person, they are in fact not the same.

Hiruhiko has a realization, in the deep black darkness.

Two people try to kill each other not because they are alike but because they are different.

For Hiruhiko, differences are what makes people into friends, not similarities.

We cut to Samura in the Temple of Senkutsu, with one monk remarking that the enemy has been defeated for now but suddenly, roots emerge

Yura continues his conversation with Jean Guy, revealing that he sent a different Hishaku member that has the sorcery to counter the Temple’s defenses.

This is also a gamble like sending Hiruhiko, who failed to kill Uruha or Chihiro.

Maybe next time send two Hishaku against one former Wielder, Mr. Smart Guy.

Jena Guy points out that Yura is still unwilling to use the “trump card”. What could this ace be?

Back to Chihiro, who hears Hiruhiko explain the plan.

The Hishaku assembled 68 “Stray” sorcerers, 34 of which were given Datenseki Stone weaponry and Hiruhiko had command of this force, as well as the Hishaku members in the operation.

Back to Yura, Yura doubts they need to use the trump card and since security measures in each Sansou have been beefed up, Hishaku’s own unique countermeasures should also be strengthened.

Hiruhiko finally explains what the Hishaku are, a group of only TEN elite sorcerers and that Yura is the leader.

Chihiro already met Yura in the Rakuzaichi in Chapter 30: “Intruders”.

Hiruhiko regrets his situation ending like this but confident in his Hishaku comrades, Hiruhiko states that soon, he and Chihiro will be on the same ground, indicating that the power balance will be evened out by the operation.

Hiruhiko looks forward to when the two will kill each other as equals, now understanding that they but probably still aiming to be Chihiro’s friend, even after learning what friendship meant.

We return to the Temple that is being completely destroyed by the roots.

Uruha panics as the roots reach them.

The Tree Hishaku appears and mocks Samura’s religious beliefs as his roots slowly envelop the whole Buddha statue

Samura declares that the man will be punished by his sword.

Kagurabachi Chapter 55 will be released on October 27, 2024.
