Akira Toriyama to Receive Harvey Awards Hall of Fame for Dragon Ball
Dragon Ball’s Akira Toriyama now counts among Harvey Awards’ Hall of Fame, joining the likes of Osamu Tezuka and Neil Gaiman
On October 11, 2024, it was announced that the late Akira Toriyama, creator of Dragon Ball, would be inducted into the Harvey Awards Hall of Fame, together with Arthur Adams (Uncanny X-Men), Larry Hama (G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero), Sergio Aragonés (MAD), and John Buscema (The Avengers).
Receiving the award on behalf of the late Toriyama, Bird Studio Co., Ltd. and Capsule Corporation Tokyo have stated:
“We are very honored to receive the news that Akira Toriyama has been selected for the prestigious Harvey Award Hall of Fame. As a creator, he had always said that his work says it all. We are especially grateful to the American fans for their long-standing enthusiasm and dedicated support. We hope you will continue to support his work for many years to come as we continue to develop and expand upon his masterpieces.”
Named after famed cartoonist and MAD creator Harvey Kurtzman (1924–1993), the Harvey Awards are an annual award aimed to give due recognition to the achievements of creators in the publishing industry.
According to their website, the Harvey Hall of Fame Award is given to creators “who have had a distinguished career or impact on the medium for over two decades.”
The list includes Osamu Tezuka (Astro Boy, Kimba the White Lion) in 2019, and Rumiko Takahashi (Inuyasha, Ranma ½ ) in 2021, who count among legendary creators such as Mike Mignola (Hellboy) in 2019,  Dwayne Mcduffie (Justice League, Ben 10 Alien Force and Ultimate Alien) in 2020, and Neil Gaiman (The Sandman) in 2022.
“Delicious in Dungeon” by Ryoko Kui is the winner of the 2024 Harvey Award for Best Manga Title, with “Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End”(Kanehito Yamada and Tsukasa Abe) and “Witch Hat Atelier” (Kamome Shirahama) also nominated for this category, although “Witch Hat Atelier” was the recipient for the 2020 Harvey Award of the same category.

Other manga titles to have received recognition in this category include “My Hero Academia” by Kohei Horikoshi in 2019 and “Chainsaw Man” by Tatsuki Fujimoto from 2021 to 2023.
For the category “Best American Edition of Foreign Material”, the title was held by “Akira” by Katsuhiro Otomo in 1990, 1991, 1992, and 1996, and “Attack on Titan” by Hajime Isayama in 2014.
