One Piece: What Do We Know of Scopper Gaban So Far

Although he is Roger’s third strongest crew member, we barely know much about Scopper Gaban. Could he be the silhouetted man in Elbaph?

One Piece is filled with a wide cast of characters and each crew has strong members.

In the Roger Pirates, Silvers Rayleigh, the right-hand man of Gol D. Roger, is called the “Dark King” but less is said of the third man of the Roger Pirates, Scopper Gaban.

In spite barely featuring anywhere in the story compared to his fellow Roger Pirates, Scopper Gaban has been highly anticipated for a reappearance even before the Oden flashback, which was where he would have the most long-running appearance, and is theorized to be a candidate for the mysterious newcomer in Elbaph with spiky hair and a Wano kusa hat.

Gaban is a man with dark glasses and long black spiky hair tied on a bushy ponytail.

38 years before the present story, Scopper Gaban is already a member of the Roger Pirates and was there for the God Valley Incident together with his captain Gol D. Roger and fellow subordinate Silvers Rayleigh excitedly rushing to the fray against the Rocks Pirates.

Gaban was also there when they found baby Shanks among the treasure chests in God Valley that were left behind.

Gaban was also there when Golden Lion Shiki declared his intent to take over the world and offered an alliance.

Gaban was there to calm down Buggy, who was terrified and wanted the crew to surrender to Shiki but Roger refused

This disagreement led to the Edd War that resulted in Shiki’s loss due to the aforementioned storm that sunk half of Shiki’s armada.

Gaban’s most prominent appearance was 26 years ago when he joined the Rogers Pirates in a skirmish with the Marines on an island.

Here, the Whitebeard Pirates also happened to stop by and it led to a confrontation with Kozuki Oden, son of Wano’s Shogun and then a member of the Whitebeard Pirates.

Before Gaban and Rayleigh could respond, Roger decided to be the one to greet the newcomer first with Divine Departure, which blew him away.

For three days and nights, Gaban and Rayleigh would lead the charge against the Whitebeard Pirates, even managing to trade blows with Oden himself in Episode 966: “Roger’s Wish! A New Journey”.

Eventually, Roger would bring in Oden to join their journey to find the Poneglyphs.

Gaban was there for the entire One Piece journey, including the arrival to Laugh Tale, where he also laughed with his captain and fellow crewmates.

After Roger became King of the Pirates, Roger would disband the crew and be the first to leave.

Gaban joined the remaining Roger Pirates as they brought Oden back to his homeland of Wano Country and that would be the last we see of him.

Like other members of the Roger Pirates, Scopper’s name follows a metal theme, with his being “copper”.

He can be described as a more straightforward, honest individual, who would rather go straight to the point.

He was the first to express disagreement with bringing Kozuki Oden into the Roger Pirates and did not wish for Roger to bow his head before Whitebeard, wanting Roger to maintain his position and honor as a Captain.

Although Rayleigh is the direct Zoro counterpart for the Straw Hats in terms of leadership roles and power, Scopper has Zoro’s straightforwardness, brutal honesty and crew loyalty.

We do not see much from Scopper Gaban but he uses axes and was able to clash with Oden, one of the strongest samurai in Wano, implying that Gaban could use Haki or at least match Oden in terms of raw strength.

There are two leading ideas as to where Scopper might be in the present day, one of course being the Elbaph silhouette (the man from Chapter 631’s cover story, who visited Crocus) but long before that, we also had the tattooed man.

Oda does have spectacular setting and character design but this particular character with the tattoos all over his head screams “too much effort” and he only appears in chapter 550: “Marine Headquarters” , where everyone has their opinions, fears, and even prayers regarding the upcoming Paramount War between Whitebeard and the Marines.

Among the people was a man with a prominent tattoo design on his head and a uniquely patterned robe, which contrasts the more mundane crowd.

What makes him look like Gaban are the shades and his age.

His only line here is: “If he’s wise, he won’t show. What’s the life of one pirate against those of so many?”

This would indicate that he thinks that Whitebeard is the type of person who would value his own crew over one life.

It is also fitting that this is said next to a shepherd, herding sheep and preventing them from being lost.

A fitting parable. However, there is not much of an indication that he is Gaban, an ex-Whitebeard pirate, or anything because this is his only appearance yet it seems Oda left him here with an implied intent to make him memorable.
