Pre-Trial Proceedings For Kyoto Animation Arsonist Case To Begin On May 8
The court, prosecution, and defense are currently making arrangements for the main trial to be held from early September to late December.
According to a report by NHK on Friday, the Kyoto District Court will initiate pre-trial procedures for the case of arson murder, which resulted in the deaths of 36 individuals and injuries to 33 others at Kyoto Animation on May 8th.

During the pre-trial proceedings, the three parties will determine the exact timeline and number of days required for the trial. They will also discuss previous matters and evidence.
Kyoto Animation’s Studio 1 building was engulfed in a catastrophic fire on July 18th, 2019, with 70 individuals present inside the building during the incident.
Along with those inside the building, a man in his 40s was also present in the area, on his way to work, and suffered minor injuries due to smoke inhalation.

The Kyoto Prefectural Police arrested the suspect, who was 41 years old at the time, for allegedly using gasoline to ignite the fire.
The man reportedly purchased two canisters containing 40 liters of gasoline and used a cart to transport them to Kyoto Animation’s Studio 1 building.
In December 2020, the Japanese prosecutors charged the suspect with the offense.

The demolition of Kyoto Animation’s Studio 1 building was completed in April 2020. Following this, the studio began recruiting new staff in July 2020.
In July 2022, Kyoto Animation broadcasted a commemorative video to observe the third anniversary of the arson attack. The studio also streamed memorial videos in honor of the victims on the previous two anniversaries.
