The highly anticipated final season of the hit anime series Ultraman has arrived on Netflix.

Based on the popular manga by Eiichi Shimizu and Tomohiro Shimoguchi.

A popular Japanese news website, “Mantan Web,” held an interview with Ryohei Kimura, the voice actor for Shinjiro Hayata, as well as directors Kenji Kamiyama and Shinji Aramaki.

The interview provided an insight into their thoughts on the final season and the behind-the-scenes production.

Director Aramaki revealed that while the original manga was still ongoing, they collaborated closely with the original author. They also received input from Tsuburaya Productions to determine the focus of the final season.

The story delves into the relationship between Shinjiro and his father’s generation, as well as other members of the Special Forces, adding a new dimension to the narrative.

The directors also emphasised their commitment to honouring the original Ultraman series that they grew up watching.

They incorporated familiar elements such as the character Mephisto and Daisuke Arashi, a friend of Shinjiro’s father.

Director Aramaki even consulted with Shinji Higuchi, the director of Shin Ultraman, to ensure a cohesive connection between the two stories.

When asked about the ending of Shinjiro’s story, director Kamiyama expressed the challenge of concluding a character’s journey.

He believed that Shinjiro’s growth and development throughout the series called for a different kind of ending. He wanted to have an ending that would leave room for further exploration and tease a slightly mature version of the character.

Ryohei Kimura, who voiced Shinjiro in the series, discussed the ongoing growth and unresolved conflicts that define his character.

He expressed that Shinjiro continually evolves but faces complex issues without any clear answers, reflecting the complexity of real-life challenges.

The directors praised Kimura’s portrayal, highlighting the chemistry between his voice and Shinjiro’s characteristics.

According to him, despite the dispersed nature of the final season voice recordings, the cast’s familiarity with each other’s performances provided a sense of security and cohesion.

As for the highlights of the final season, Kimura mentioned the return to the problems faced in season one, but now with a matured Shinjiro approaching them from different perspectives.

Director Kamiyama praised the visual quality. He noted that the final season represents the culmination of the staff’s efforts with a production value akin to a theatre experience.

Director Aramaki emphasised the packed content of the final season and the heightened tension leading up to the climax.
