Attack on Titan’s New Post-Credits Scene HIDES AN EVEN BIGGER TWIST ENDING
The post-credits scene of the Attack on Titan movie were the perfect sendoff to Hajime Isayama’s masterpiece but with a twist involving the manga’s controversial final page.
The Attack on Titan: The Last Attack contains 5 minutes of new content, including the final volume of the “Attack on School Castes” story at the end of Volume 34 of the story.
This shows another timeline or perhaps thousands of years after the events of the original Attack on Titan story where different versions of Eren, Mikasa, and Armin view the “Attack on Titan: The Last Attack” movie in cinemas.
This is the only adaptation of the “Attack on School Castes” fake previews and has been anticipated since the anime included “Gothkasa” and “Nerd Armin” in Part 2 of the Final Season.
They were in the “Memory Shards” sequences as Eren entered Paths, where alternate versions of his friends exist in these shards.
It is noted that these frames of the alternate Armin and Mikasa are based on Chapter 120: “A Fleeting Moment” of the manga.
What makes the post-credits more enjoyable is that new details were included that were not in the original “fake preview”.
While the three friends were watching, Udo and Zofia passed by.
Udo and Zofia were Gabi’s fellow Warrior Candidates that were killed during Eren’s attack on Willy Tybur in Episode 65: “The Warhammer Titan”, with Zofia being killed in a stampede while Udo was crushed by rubble from Eren’s transformation and subsequent rampage.
The “Attack on Titan: The Last Attack” poster is shown and they were watching the movie in “Screen 9”, which is a callback to the number “9”, the number of Titans.
When the friends leave, Levi is spotted mopping the floors as a janitor, showing off his ODM-based swordsmanship with the spray and sponge, such that even the implements emitted ODM sound effects.
In the manga previews, Levi is the school janitor, which means that Levi works part-time in the movie theater as well in the anime version.
The scene also emphasizes Levi being much “taller” and “bigger” here, which is a reference to how his height of 160cm is due to being malnourished as a child in the Underground.
While leaving the theater, from behind we see what appears to be Ymir and her three daughters walking together. This was featured in the manga preview as well but they came ahead of Eren’s group.
Armin passes by a sign that reads “Maria’s Diner”, which has the symbol for Wall Maria and the numbers “0845”, representing the year of the Fall of Shiganshina, the start of the Attack on Titan story.
Mikasa and Eren passes by a red sticker for the Diner as well.
We can also spot Niccolo, a Marleyean prisoner of war turned restaurant chef in Paradis and Sasha’s implied boyfriend.
This version of Niccolo owns a restaurant called “Niccolo Trattoria” (a “trattoria” is a small restaurant”).
Notably, Niccolo has never been featured in the manga previews.
Story of the Post-Credits Scene
During the viewing of the movie, you can see Marco being one of the people watching from behind Eren, Mikasa, and Armin.
Marco resembles his dead state as he was eaten in half by a Titan.
Yet another example of classic Isayama dark humor.
In the scene, after viewing the movie, Eren, Mikasa, and Armin get snacks and talk about their opinions of the Attack on Titan ending, with “Nerd Armin” voicing his disagreement over the conclusion of the story.
Specifically, Armin says that Goth Mikasa, who approved of the last episode, “does not read the fan websites”, and was disappointed that he was actually able to predict the ending ten years ago and there were a lack of good subversion of expectations.
Nerd Armin was disappointed that the movie did not address any of his burning questions.
Mikasa argued that the open-ended nature of the movie was meant to not be a simple closing statement but a way to let the audience interpret for themselves.
When the two ask for his opinion, Eren tells them that he enjoyed the experience and looks forward to the next work, implying the possibility of Hajime Isayama working on something else in the near future.
THE BIGGEST TWIST OF ALL…
The most important detail of all is the giant tree where Eren’s head rested, which is also where the original manga ended through its “extra pages” in the final version.
This indicates that Attack on Titan, DOES NOT, in fact, exist in a multiverse and that this is the singular universe.
In the manga preview and here in the movie, Eren even noted that the movie they watched was actually based on true history and expressed disbelief that a hundred years ago, there were Titans that existed in their world.
The addition of the tree gives a final answer as to the nature of the Attack on Titan world.
The same world, the same history, the same childhood friends that once did exist.
