Black Clover: Yami’s Devil Form Explained

Yami Sukehiro is the first person in the Yami Clan to tame the uncontrollable power of a devil from the Underworld.

In Chapter 374: “Demon-God”, Yami assumed a Devil Form, which was built up from two different developments: his origin in Hino Country and as a surviving sacrifice of the Qliphoth Advent Ritual.

Yami’s Clan of Devils

In Chapter 342: “Watch the Night”, we learn that the Yami clan were assassins who oversaw Goshu island, whose sea turned black from the evil magic power and blood of the Five-Headed Dragon.

As such, the Yami Clan is associated with demons and were often bloodthirsty.

The clan gains devil-like power through the Kikongan drug, a highly dangerous substance that improves physical and magical power but doing so induces the user in a state of uncontrollable bloodlust.

Ryuya Ryudo, the shogun of Hino and Sukehiro’s friend, gave the pill to Ichika, which is how Yami acquired his Devil Form.

How Yami Mysteriously Survived Qliphoth

In Chapter 323: “Partner”, we learn that after being rescued from the Qliphoth Advent Ritual, Yami’s heart and whole body were seemingly altered into something Grey describes as being similar to Asta’s devil, Liebe, which could be related to how the contract between Asta and Liebe restored Asta’s right arm.

Oddly, William is not affected by this even though he himself was one of the sacrifices, so his body should have been used up or changed in some way by the ritual’s release of devil energy.

Also, both men were grievously wounded during their fights with the Zogratis Siblings.

Yami’s New Powers

With his Devil body, he not only gained flight but a new level of power as he could heal his body and regenerate wounds, overcoming his limited durability as a human.

In this state, he gains clothes and a pair of devil-like horns made of Dark Magic, akin to a Unite Form except without a contracted devil.

Dark Magic is already associated with the Underworld, where the devils are born, and it is because of this that he is a key component, alongside William Vangeance’s World Tree Magic, in the creation of the Qliphoth tree that would open the gates of the Underworld.

With this new form, Yami’s magic reserves have seemingly increased and his spells have become more potent.

With a modified heart, he could very well become a devil like Zeno did when he asked Beelzebub for a devil’s heart but this might actually be a bit different as he did not awaken any devil-like traits at first until he took the Kikongan.

If you notice, majority of Sukehiro’s feats used Compound Magic with either his sister Ichika or with his Vice-Captain Nacht Faust and even all three of them.

By himself, Yami was able to defeat a Lucius clone but even that clone remarked that the Paladin Morgen Faust was much stronger than the clone and it was proven true when Yami’s Dark Dimension Slash was absorbed and Yami’s natural slowness as a Dark Magic user was unable to overcome Morgen’s speed as a Light Magic user.

Yet with Ichika and Nacht, they formed one of the most insane combinations in the entire Black Clover story.

First, Yami and Ichika combine their gravity-controlling spells, Sukehiro’s Black Moon and Ichika’s Black Star, to create Black Heavens, ensuring that the opponent is moving unsteady and their spells are less effective, as shown when Black Heavens misdirected Morgen’s Light beams, which are known for their high speed.

Next, the three combine the effects of Black Heavens and the ultimate Unite Form, combining all of Nacht’s four devils, to form the triple Compound Magic, “Dark x Dark x Shadow Magic: Walpurgis Night” to surpass Morgen’s light speed and eventually allow Nacht to take down his twin.
