Hunter x Hunter Theory: Chrollo Is After Kurapika’s Judgment Chain
In the previous chapter, Chrollo is looking for a Nen ability that will permanently end Hisoka. Kurapika is the most obvious candidate with his Judgment Chain or is he?
In Chapter 405: “Masquerade”, Chrollo is headed for Tier 1 to find a Nen user with the means to “kill Hisoka permanently”.
Chrollo defeated Hisoka in Heaven’s Arena but Hisoka survived due to post-mortem Nen, where Hisoka programmed his Bungee Gum to revitalize his heart, lungs and other vital organs in the event of his death.
To counter the possibility of Hisoka rising over and over again, he needs an instant-kill move and there are some potential candidates for that.
Who are the Nen users in Tier 1?
To get this out of the way, Chrollo would have no idea about the Guardian Spirit Beasts, so these are likely not the people he is after.
Chrollo’s ability, Skill Hunter, has a lot of complex requirements:
- Chrollo must witness the Nen ability in action with his eyes.
- He must ask questions about Nen and be answered by the victim.
- His victim’s palm must touch the handprint on the cover of the Bandit’s Secret book.
- All of the above must be completed within one hour
This already eliminates the Guardian Spirit Beasts of all 14 Kakin Princes due to their secretive nature and being mostly hard to perceive.
Among the Kakin Princes, there are two Nen users who awakened their powers before the Succession Contest, 1st Prince Benjamin and 2nd Prince Camilla.
Tier 1 also has bodyguards who are Nen users and Hunters.
From the 58 relevant and living Royal Bodyguards, 24 are Nen users
Benjamin and Camilla’s private soldiers are also Nen users.
We also have unaffiliated Nen users such as the Silent Majority user.
However, the most obvious suspect would be Kurapika, the person Chrollo is most familiar with in the Black Whale and in Tier 1.
Kurapika
Kurapika’s Chains all provide incredible abilities but the one Chrollo is after is the very ability that separated him from the Troupe for a long while, Judgment Chain as it has the means to impose conditions on the target by planting a Chain stake on their hearts.
Chrollo could use Judgment Chain to set a condition that would lead to Hisoka’s inevitable death if broken or, more directly, issue a command to seal Hisoka’s Nen away like what happened to Chrollo himself, which would be fitting irony and be a means to cancel the programming of Bungee Gum that allowed Hisoka to survive Chrollo’s bombs in the Heaven’s Arena match.
Chrollo is also already a Specialist, which means he can make full use of the powers of every Chain, except maybe Chain Jail.
Chain Jail is impossible to use because Hisoka is not a Phantom Troupe member and there might be weird consequences for a Phantom Troupe member, its leader no less, using an ability like Chain Jail.
Steal Chain would be a strange one because its secondary ability, Stealth Dolphin, requires the use of Emperor Time, which is tied to Kurapika’s Scarlet Eyes and Chrollo would need to either fight Kurapika or negotiate with him in order to see the ability.
It is possible Chrollo will not have access to it or even need to use it since his goal is to permanently end Hisoka but Steal Chain’s default power is enough as it can replace Chain Jail’s Zetsu effect and implement Zetsu on top of draining the user’s aura and one of their abilities.
The gambit can work akin to what happens in Jujutsu Kaisen when Higuruma’s Domain Expansion stole one of Sukuna’s cursed techniques, except it stole his Kamutake weapon and not Malevolent Shrine.
Kurapika would be the perfect option because both characters have much history, with Kurapika’s whole goal being to avenge the Kurta Clan due to the massacre committed by the Phantom Troupe and Chrollo having been a victim of Judgment Chain.
The two will either fight in an intense duel or negotiate but the latter route is sketchy because we do not know if Chrollo can even steal the Conjured Chains or be acclimated to their unique Limitations and Restrictions.
Can Kurapika even be able loan Chrollo one of his own Chains for the purpose of removing Hisoka, who may not pose a direct threat to Kurapika or 13th Prince Woble?
If there is a chance Kurapika can give up Judgment Chain, Kurapika would lose an important asset in his quest to reclaim the last of the Scarlet Eyes from 4th Prince Tserriednich yet the match between
There are of course other candidates to consider.
1st Prince Benjamin
Benjamin Baton works similarly to Skill Hunter but without the complications of flipping through pages and Benjamin can use all the abilities of his deceased soldiers.
But there lies the problem: Benjamin Baton only works for Benjamin.
Benjamin Baton requires the user to have established a connection with Benjamin’s Royal Soldiers and if Chrollo could steal that, can Skill Hunter be able to bear the requirement automatically or will it be useless due to its ties to Benjamin.
2st Prince Camilla
Of course the woman with “nine lives” would have the ability to kill Hisoka before he gets more life in him.
The most obvious ability for instant-killing would be Camilla’s Cat’s Name, a Counteractive Type ability that allows Camilla to be revived from death using the life force of her killer.
The giant cat Nen Beast comes up and crushes Camilla’s killer with its paws and drains its life force, which turns into a liquid that is fed into the dead Camilla to revive her.
An ability empowered by post-mortem Nen, like Hisoka’s revival, would possess the precise power Chrollo is looking for.
The only weaknesses are that it requires Chrollo to be in a state of Zetsu, which means no aura leaking out and thus vulnerable to every attack, and that Chrollo will not reverse any damage that is non-fatal.
The trick to this ability is that Chrollo must be killed by Hisoka for the ability to activate, which seems simple enough and a risk Chrollo is willing to take.
4th Prince Tserriednich
This brings us to Chrollo’s original objective before losing Shalnark and Kortopi: actual treasure.
Tserriednich might possess a collection of Chrollo’s interest, which might even include the Scarlet Eyes that he had a hand in giving to the wicked Renaissance man.
But more importantly, even without knowing it at this time, Chrollo might run into Tserriednich or notice his Nen ability in action.
Parallel Future, if we simply it further, is basically like King Crimson and Epitaph from Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure Part 5: Golden Wind, which allows Tserriednich to see ten seconds into the future by closing his eyes and putting himself in a state of Zetsu.
When he opens his eyes, he will be able to perceive ten seconds ahead while seeing and living in real time.
This ability is a more complex version of Neon Nostrade’s Lovely Ghostwriter ability, which writes prophecies in poems and it is an ability lost in Chrollo’s book.
This ability would be useful but it will be tricky for Chrollo to fulfill the requirements due to it being perceived solely by the user.
Perhaps if Tserriednich could relay the information to Chrollo, it could be enough but Chrollo can only experience Tserriednich moving unusually without the context or knowledge of Parallel Future happening.
Basho
Basho’s Hatsu is Great Haiku, which allows Basho to turn his poems into reality, provided the poems are actually good.
This would fit Chrollo due to his fascination with books and literature, so he might make better use of it.
Perhaps he can explore the limits of the Nen ability and use words to kill Hisoka.
Can a poem cancel or seal Nen abilities like Judgment Chain? Probably not.
However, it might involve Hisoka’s fake prophecies that could prove for an interesting battle.
Silent Majority User
Although a mysterious player, the Silent Majority user might be what Chrollo knows about since it is an ability that happens to show up on the boat.
Silent Majority invokes the use of a marionette that conjures four snakes with several mouths across the bodies of their targets,
These mouths will make numerous holes in the target, draining them of their blood.
One snake takes 44 seconds, and all four attacking at once can drain an entire body of blood in 11 seconds.
These snakes are visible to the naked eye, which provides great risk but it also empowers the ability more.
The snakes could pierce through a durable opponent like Hisoka and the blood-draining process could be fast enough to weaken the lungs and heart long enough to prevent the post-mortem Bungee Gum from kicking in again.
However, if this is all that Silent Majority can do, Chrollo would need to play smart, otherwise it might not offer the guaranteed kill shot that he is looking for.
Rihan
One of Prince Benjamin’s soldiers, Rihan has a Nen ability called Predator that allows Rihan to create a Nen Beast, the Predator, that will be able to completely cancel his target’s Nen ability.
While being responsible for devouring 8th Prince Salé-salé’s Guardian Spirit Beast, it is an ability that works on all types of Hatsu and is a complete counter provided that Rihan is accurate in his analysis of the Nen ability, which is a condition for Chrollo’s Skill Hunter to even steal an ability.
This ability can be easily observed and has the potential to permanently kill Hisoka by removing Bungee Gum with greater accuracy and fewer complications than even Judgment Chain.
Unknown Abilities
Beyond Netero and King Nasubi have yet to display their Nen abilities but they are the two most prominently featured figures on the boat so if it is not a known ability, it will be one of these two.
Beyond Netero has innate knowledge of Nen curses while Nasubi was the previous Succession Contest winner by virtue of being King at this time and he might have the accumulated Nen of previous Princes that could provide the firepower Chrollo is looking for.
