Is Denji Going to Puke Himself Out? Chainsaw Man Chapter 183-184 Review
Get ready for the smartest plan or the most disgusting sight to behold in Chainsaw Man
In the previous Chainsaw Man chapter, we see Yoru and Asa sharing their experiences of loss with Denji, who pukes out the Snow Devil and recalls memories from the past.
A Dumb Ingenious Idea
Chainsaw Man Chapter 183 is titled, “Barf, Head, Perv”
This chapter has 16 pages.
Well, snow is back and so are memories from an event we have yet to see in Part 1.
It seems at some point within the story, Denji and Power were brought to the gravestones of Aki’s family, who were mercilessly killed by the Gun Devil.
Asa is surprised to see a head pop out of Denji’s mouth.
Disgusted by the taste, Denji heads for the pond to drink water.
It would have been nice to see a memory of Himeno since barf equals her.
As it turns out, drinking the water brought back memories of Reze, their coffee.
He is drowning in the water, drowning in the despair of seeing his loved ones disappear.
Nayuta and the dogs. Pochita.
Poor Denji.
As he sees Pochita, he realized why Pochita ate the devils.
Not to make the concepts themselves go away but so that in the process of barfing, Denji would remember.
In a way, Chainsaw Man’s existence does not simply equate with “erasure” but the value of memories in themselves.
Asa manages to rescue Denji, who reflects on his present experiences.
He enjoyed the sushi he recently ate and he recalled the boner he felt from a while back.
He centers his core back to the basics, “grub and girls”.
Denji also makes Asa realize that perhaps not all Devil powers are cancelled in Aging’s World.
The Snow Devil’s head is still here.
Interesting that the whole body did not emerge right then and there.
Denji realizes that what he barfed up was not from his own stomach but from Chainsaw Man in the real world.
Denji thinks of a neat idea from the experience.
Running in Circles, The Myth of Denji
Chainsaw Man Chapter 184 is titled, “Run, Denji, Run”
This chapter has 16 pages.
While the Aging Devil victim still cries like a baby, we see Denji running around.
Yoru thinks Denji has lost hope, which is also what brings the Aging Devil’s attention to his residents at long last.
Aging Devil offers Denji a chance to escape.
Since Chainsaw Man’s heart is in the real world, Aging Devil tells Denji to convince Chainsaw Man to eat the Aging Devil.
The Aging Devil reveals that children are about to be killed as the Aging Devil is about to be eaten, as per that terrible agreement with the Japanese Government in Chapter 174: “Ayyy, Aging”.
Denji states the obvious (at least to the audience) that Chainsaw Man is a superhero who would never consent to having children be killed.
The Aging Devil expresses surprise at how Denji has moved on from Nayuta’s loss so quickly.
However, while running and in an adrenaline rush, Denji states even he loses loved ones and experiences trauma, he will always find new family because he is a perpetual motion machine.
This is…depressing to think about.
Denji copes and sees meaning in the mere fact that he will always be able
Because of his nigh-immortality as a Hybrid, he will always make new bonds and experiences, new families to love and be loved by.
While this speaks to his resilience, in the typical Fujimoto sense, this is a depressing reminder of reality, that it is always loss and nonsense.
Yet by surviving, by being alive, even in the darkness, we make our own light. We find our own fires to light and our own bonds to build.
This is a “lived out” version of the Myth of Sisyphus by Albert Camus and based on the Greek myth where the arrogant king was punished by Zeus to roll a boulder up a steep mountain.
At the end of Camus’ essay, he says:
“I leave Sisyphus at the foot of the mountain! One always finds one’s burden again. But Sisyphus teaches the higher fidelity that negates the gods and raises rocks. He too concludes that all is well. This universe henceforth without a master seems to him neither sterile nor futile. Each atom of that stone, each mineral flake of that night filled mountain, in itself forms a world. The struggle itself toward the heights is enough to fill a man’s heart. One must imagine Sisyphus happy.”
One must imagine Denji happy.
This is where we leave Denji off in Part 1 and perhaps in Part 2 as well.
At the end of every Part, Denji loses all of his loved ones but gains new ones that he can begin a new journey with.
Perhaps this is the metaphor for the entire Chainsaw Man story.
Even with the Death Devil and the Apocalypse, the world will reset and Denji will still be around, with new characters to surround himself with.
Maybe even in the next century, Chainsaw Man will be an eternal hero of the world, not just of Hell.
Chainsaw Man Chapter 185 will be released on November 26, 2024.
