Jujutsu Kaisen: The Complete History of Sukuna’s 20 Fingers

The dismembered fingers of the King of Curses are the most important artifacts in Jujutsu Kaisen, defining the conflicts

We will go over the fingers in the chronological order of their appearance, rather than based on how many fingers Yuji has eaten in a given point in time. We will also look at their original locations and possessors, including how those fingers were used.

What are the Sukuna Fingers?

During the Heian Era, under unspecified circumstances, Sukuna learned of a way to live on after death from Kenjaku, even agreeing to join the Culling Games.

He channeled his entire soul into the fingers of his four hands, dividing his power and scattering them.

Through binding vows, Sukuna’s fingers are indestructible.

As special-grade cursed objects, Sukuna’s fingers would gather cursed spirits around them, some even eating the fingers to become Finger Bearers.

Talismans were placed to prevent the gathering of curses but over-time, these seals were weakened

1st Finger

Appearance: Chapter 1

Location: Sugisawa Municipal High School

Fate: Eaten by Yuji Itadori to awaken Sukuna

The first thing we see in the series is the small outdoor thermometer box containing Sukuna’s finger.

Yuji’s Occult Research Club would take the finger from its resting place.

By removing the seals around the finger, the kids garnered the attention of many cursed spirits into the school, attacking them at night.

To save them, Yuji consumes the Sukuna finger, which revives Sukuna after a thousand-year slumber.

2nd Finger

Appearances: Chapter 2

Owner: Satoru Gojo

Fate: Eaten by Yuji Itadori to further progress Sukuna’s revival

Satoru Gojo obtained one finger from Jujutsu High or from some unspecified mission locating the fingers and gave it to Yuji after the latter saw to the cremation of Wasuke, his grandfather.

3rd Finger

Appearance: Chapter 6

Location: Juvenile Detention Center (Cursed Womb)

Origin: Finger Bearer

Fate: Eaten by Ryomen Sukuna in Chapter 8

The 3rd finger was the source of the Cursed Womb formed in the Detention Center. After Yuji’s tough battle with the newly-formed Finger Bearer, Sukuna would take control of Yuji’s body and, with Malevolent Shrine, destroy the Finger Bearer that tried to fight him. 

When Megumi Fushiguro confronts Sukuna, the latter removes Yuji’s heart and eats the finger as insurance.

4th finger 

Appearance: Chapter 24

Owner: Kenjaku

Fate: Recovered as one of the ten Fingers in Jogo’s care, eaten by Sukuna

A Sukuna finger was left on Nagi Yoshino’s table, resulting in a cursed spirit killing her. This would spark Junpei’s clash against Yuji, which was secretly part of Mahito’s plan.

Jujutsu High would retrieve this finger and count among the artefacts Mahito stole in Chapter 52.

5th to 9th fingers

Appearance: Chapter 53

Location: Jujutsu High

Fate: Stolen by Mahito, used as five of the ten Fingers in Jogo’s care, eaten by Sukuna

Along with the finger Mahito used for his plan against Junpei and Yuji, five more fingers hidden in Jujutsu High’s cursed warehouse were stolen by Mahito and were among the ten fingers Jogo used to bargain with Sukuna.

10th Finger

Appearance: Chapter 57

Location: Under Yasohachi Bridge

Origin: Finger Bearer

Fate: Eaten by Sukuna through Yuji’s hand

Megumi encounters a Finger Bearer while on a mission to exorcise the curse placed on his stepsister Tsumiki. After using an incomplete Domain Expansion, Megumi retrieves the finger but this gets swallowed up by Sukuna.

This is the 4th finger consumed by Yuji.

11th Finger

Appearance: Chapter 111

Owner: Nanako and Mimiko Hasaba

Fate: Eaten by an unconscious Yuji

At some point, the twins acquired at least one Sukuna finger, which they feed to Yuji. Jogo would detect this, leading to him feeding his own Sukuna fingers to awaken the King of Curses.

12th to 15th Fingers

Appearance: Chapter 111

Owner: Jogo

Fate: Eaten by an unconscious Yuji to awaken Sukuna

Jogo had ten fingers in his possession. One was used by Mahito in his plans, five more were from Jujutsu High.

The remaining four were likely acquired by Kenjaku or the rest of the group overtime. 

These fingers would be consumed to forcibly let Sukuna take control of Yuji’s body

16th to 18th Fingers

Appearance: Chapter 222

Owner: Uraume

Fate: Eaten by Sukuna

Uraume delivers three more fingers to Sukuna but they point out that they do not have the last finger. This leads Sukuna to instead consume his mummified corpse to compensate for the loss.

19th finger

Appearance: Chapter 257

Owner: Kenjaku

Fate: Inserted into Yuji Itadori in birth

The count of the fingers has been lost after Shibuya but questions remain over how many did Yuji actually eat throughout the series.

This is why the Hasaba twins kept quiet about how many they fed Yuji, both to blur the finger count and to suspend the subplot.

We would get an answer in Chapter 257, where we not only learn that Jin Itadori is the reincarnation of Sukuna’s stillborn twin but that Kenjaku had also planted one of his fingers into Yuji Itadori while bearing him inside Kaori’s womb to make the boy into an appropriate vessel for Sukuna’s Reincarnation and participate in the future Culling Game.

Sukuna noted that Yuji had residuals of his soul even after he left the boy’s body.

This explains why Yuji felt like a cage, but more importantly, is the cause of his superhuman abilities, on top of being partially a Death Painting. 

20th finger

Appearance: Chapter 266

Owner: Jujutsu High

Fate: Used for Nobara Kugisaki’s Resonance to debilitate Sukuna

For a long time, many have speculated where the final Sukuna finger could be located. 

Sukuna had long suspected that Satoru Gojo had it hidden away in the event the Sorcerers needed to fully revive him to completely exorcise him.

Initially, Sukuna assumed that Yuta Okkotsu had Rika consume the finger to gain access to Sukuna’s Shrine. 

The finger is sealed inside the spiral staircase in Shiromaru Tyouseiti Dam in the Tokyo Prefecture.

Yuji Itadori’s left pinky finger

Appearance: Chapter 212

Fate: Forcibly consumed by Megumi 

Although not a Sukuna finger, this was the instrument Sukuna used in his master plan to transfer his soul from Yuji’s cage to reincarnate into his desired vessel, Megumi.

After Yorozu reveals herself as possessing Tsumiki’s body, Sukuna takes advantage of Megumi’s shock to invoke his binding vow with Yuji to take over Yuji and initiate the transfer. 

Yuji’s left ring finger

Appearance: Chapter 266

Fate: Consumed by Rika to obtain Shrine

Throughout the fight with Sukuna, Yuji’s left hand has been obscured but in Chapter 266, we see that Yuji sacrificed one more finger to improve their odds. Yuji replicated Sukuna’s method to provide Yuta with a copy of Shrine.
