Jujutsu Kaisen’s Loose Ends

What other plot points need to be wrapped up before Jujutsu Kaisen ends?

As we count down to the end of Jujutsu Kaisen, what other plot points still need to be resolved? What questions should Gege Akutami answer before closing the manga?

Will the Merger Happen?

The Merger is an event that has been hyped and prepared since the start of the Culling Games. As the name suggests, the Merger will unite everyone in Japan with Tengen to become a new entity, transcending the limits of curse and human. This was Kenjaku’s whole plan and he passed on the Merger activation to Sukuna.

So, the easy answer to whether or not the merger will happen seems to be no. With only a few chapters left, there is little time to establish one climactic battle.

In addition, Sukuna is branded as the main antagonist of Jujutsu Kaisen, representing both the height of sorcery and the philosophical counterpoint to the human struggles of Yuji Itadori and his friends. Sukuna takes over Kenjaku’s plot and spotlight, restoring the series to where it started, with the King of Curses himself.

While it is exciting to see a Third Impact-like event where the boundaries between individual souls will be removed to create something unknown, it might just show that we are as morbidly curious as the evil Kenjaku, so perhaps it will not happen to assert that theme.

Uraume vs Hakari

JJK 245

The last we saw Uraume and Hakari was Chapter 259 when they noticed Sukuna’s use of Divine Flame. Uraume is Sukuna’s assistant and an ancient sorcerer with a powerful ice cursed technique. To the fanbase, it felt like the two spent the whole fight having a date or watching the Sukuna showdown from a safe distance.

Is it Go-jover?

Jujutsu-Kaisen-Gojo-Satoru

Ever since Gojo’s death in Chapter 236, fans have been speculating on whether or not the most popular character of the series has truly left this world. Even with Akutami’s infamous grudge against the handsome Satoru Gojo, surely Gojo still has a role to play in the story.

Based on the scenes shown after his death, it is clear that Gojo has said his goodbye, being content with the performance he delivered against Sukuna.

Additionally, the one occupying Gojo’s body presently is Yuta. If ever he is “alive”, that would be awkward for two souls in one body who happen to be distantly related to each other. Yuji might know a thing or two about that.

The fates of every Sorcerer that fought Sukuna

jjk 253 maki vs sukuna

So far, we have confirmed the deaths of Gojo, Higurama and Choso. Yuta might also die because he has not found a way to prolong Kenjaku’s curse technique and stay in Gojo’s dead body.

Maki’s fate is also left in the air. In Chapter 253, Sukuna landed a powerful Black Flash barrage on her body. Since Maki has no cursed energy, she cannot use Reverse Cursed Technique to heal herself but so far she was not shown to have lost any body parts.

The Mystery of Tengen

Tengen_Human_Appearence_FI

Ever since their official introduction in Chapter 144, Tengen has been the greatest source of information on the foundations of the Jujutsu World.

Although Akutami has shown us what a human Tengen would look like, we do not know how Tengen came to be friends with Kenjaku, their relationship with Sukuna, Uraume and other Heian Era figures. In the fragments of Heian Era history we can glean from, Tengen is in none of these flashbacks.

The Angel

The Angel became one of the incarnated sorcerers for the express purpose of stopping this heretical plan. We do not know much about the Angel’s background, although her character is quite anachronistic given that the name of her cursed technique and even her religious mentality sound more aligned to Christianity, which would not have appeared during the Heian Era.

Sukuna’s 2nd weapon

Sukuna weapons

In Chapter 238, Sukuna brings out Kamutoke to match Hakari’s lightning with his own. This copy of Kamutoke was made by Yorozu. But what ever happened to the other weapon, Hiten? What does it do? Perhaps we will never know.

The United States and Jujutsu Governance

Kenjaku shows curses to US government

A minor part of the Culling Games involved the entry of US and other nations’ troops into Japanese territory. Akutami has spent two chapters (200-201) exploring the potential use of cursed energy as a source of renewable energy. This is mainly with Kenjaku negotiating with the White House on jujutsu research. Kenjaku recommended a larger force of soldiers be deployed to Japan to capture sorcerers.

Of course, Kenjaku knows that guns do not win in a sorcery fight, which is why he sent out a mass sacrifice to compensate for the cursed energy output of most of the colonies

Although Kenjaku, and to an extent, the author, treat the subplot as a way to speed up the Culling Games, the revelation of cursed energy’s existence should not be downplayed. In some way, the end of Jujutsu Kaisen should address the possibility of more foreign sorcerers outside Miguel’s clan becoming intertwined with what becomes of Japan after the end of the Culling Games.

Ever since the Shibuya Incident, the Jujutsu World has irrevocably changed.  The end of Jujutsu Kaisen will bring audiences to a brave new world that could tease a potential sequel in some shape or form.

The payoff of the Zen’in Clan Massacre

zenin massacre

One of the most shocking parts of the Culling Games Saga has nothing directly to do with the Culling Games at all. To acquire the Zen’in armory for the Culling Games, Maki heads to her ancestral home but is prevented by her clan elders. This led to the death of Mai and, in turn, the death of the Zen’in Clan and its prominence. However, with Megumi becoming Sukuna’s vessel, the future of the clan remains uncertain.

What happens to the Kamo clan with Kenjaku gone? In Chapter 191, Kenjaku took over the clan of his former vessel Noritoshi Kamo.

Additionally, we do not know what the Gojo clan is up to since its strongest member has been killed. With the three Sorcerer Families almost defunct and the Jujutsu higher-ups eliminated, what becomes of jujutsu society after the story ends? Will jujutsu sorcerers still go to school and hunt curses as a job? Will the human government take a more direct role? Most importantly, what will this new order mean for Maki, the sorcerer without sorcery?

The effects of breaking a Binding Vow

binding vow

The brilliance of Jujutsu Kaisen’s fights lay in its intricate Curse power system. Like Hunter x Hunter’s Nen system, the Jujutsu system uses human emotion to fuel and create diverse techniques and because all curse energy is from negative human emotion, those powers can be improved or restricted through binding vows.

jjk 79

We know the penalty for breaking a binding vow with oneself is the loss of whatever was gained through the contract. However, we have not seen the consequences of breaking a binding vow between different individuals. Both Sukuna and Kenjaku take this matter seriously. Kenjaku even explains in Chapter 79 that no one really knows what will happen if someone breaks a binding vow with others, so the risk is not worth it.

jjk 143

Yuta Okkutsu had to circumvent the binding vow to execute Yuji by momentarily killing him one time and then healing him in the same instant. This is the closest we see to someone actively breaking a binding vow and he suffers no consequences because of a mere technicality.

jjk 79 heavenly restriction

However, based on the dialogue in the same chapter between Kenjaku and Mechamaru, it is implied that the consequence is something like a Heavenly Restriction but without benefits. Nevertheless, this has yet to play out.

Unreleased Domain Expansions

triple domain expansions

Jujutsu Kaisen has ended with so many new Domains revealed, with the final battle finally giving Yuji his own Domain Expansion.

However, much like Bleach with its Bankai, some fans complain that we have not seen everyone’s Domain Expansion. To name a few, Uraume, Utahime, Mei-mei, and Todo have not shown their domain expansions. Being Grade 1 Sorcerers, it is surprising that Todo and Mei-mei have not shown off their Domains. Geto is the only Special Grade Sorcerer whose Domain Expansion is not shown but it is too late now that his and Kenjaku’s roles are finished.

Yuta, Ishigori and Takako unleashed their Domain Expansions simultaneously but only Yuta’s was revealed. Maybe there will be extra material or an interview with Akutami that will elaborate on these missing pieces.

Perhaps it is fitting that the series ends with Yuji Itadori, the protagonist of Jujutsu Kaisen, being the newest and last person to unlock their Domain Expansion.
