The Beginning of a New Arc. Chainsaw Man Chapters 191 Review!

Chainsaw Man is set to begin a new arc. Will the Death Devil come for sure?

In the previous Chainsaw Man chapter, we see Yoshida drag the Aging Devil back to its own world and make a deal with it, which results in the humans returning to their normal lives as they hang out in a restaurant.

The Aging Devil Arc has officially ended after 35 chapters, the longest arc in Part 2 and all of Chainsaw Man. So begins the new arc.

Chapter 191: A Playful Beginning

Chainsaw Man Chapter 191 is titled, “‘Cuz I’m a Devil”

This chapter has 17 pages.

The chapter begins with Yoshida confirming that Katana Man and the other Chainsaw Man Church people (Haruka, Nobana and Seigi) have been captured.

Yoshida calls them Denji’s friends because of their part in the Chainsaw Man Church but he is aware that Denji might not care for them.

Denji recalls the events that happened after he discovered Nayuta’s head: he woke up to see “Asa” defeat him and level most of Tokyo with the Statue of Liberty.

Denji also found it strange that Asa regrew the arms she lost during her fights against Yoshida in Chapter 145: “Kumbaya” and Pochita in Chapter 175: “Both Hands”.

This allows Yoru to finally reveal herself in quite a subdued, calm scene, where she says that she has spared everyone since she needs to maintain her host Asa, who is on the verge of a breakdown from all the killing Yoru did in the Aging Devil Arc.

Asa really is Tatsuki Fujimoto’s Yuji Itadori.

Asa is the main protagonist but her relationship with Denji would have some impact of the reveal

However, this was bound to happen and in typical Fujimoto fashion, it works out since Denji reminded him of the events of Chapter 168: “Kiss, Love, Sperm”, asking which of the two did the deed.

Manipulative Yoru makes Denji a fool by asking him to eat his own hand, which Denji does, without the gore of course.

Yoshida is surprised how Yoru was able to defeat Pochita yet she did not turn him into a weapon but Yoru evades the question, saying that Denji is already her pet.

Part 1 had Makima as the pet owner and object of Denji’s affection. In Part 2, that seems to be Yoru but the dynamic is quite flipped.

Yoru’s excuse hides her growing feelings for Denji, which she revealed more openly in Chapter 181: “Trees on the Mind”, where she felt pity and kissed him for it.

Yoshida tells Yoru to make Denji a weapon right away since the Death Devil is coming, 100% guaranteed because of the Nostradamus prophecy.

Denji asks the seemingly smug Yoshida if every misfortune Denji faced, the loss of his home and Nayuta, were for this cause and Yoshida could only smirk.

As cruel as Public Safety has been towards Denji since the very beginning of Chainsaw Man, this is what Makima once called a “necessary evil” and it does show that Public Safety, regardless of Makima’s plotting, embody both her ideology and the mentality Makima was “taught”, either in her own Devil life or by the government using her.

Yoshida recalls their deal in the Aging World and gives Denji a gun.

If Denji consents to becoming a weapon here and now, he can shoot Yoshida and Fumiko but when Denji does shoot Yoshida, the gun is revealed to be unloaded.

Yoru explains that while humans are all about manipulate (to manipulate and be manipulated), Devils operate on instinct.

Seeing the waitress with their cake, Yoru throws the cake at Yoshida’s face, much to Denji’s chagrin but Yoru justifies herself, saying this is how Devils work with their instinct.

Yoru points a finger at him and says “bang”.

What Happens Now?

Yoshida sets up the mood for the current arc as the goal now for his side is to make Denji’s Chainsaw Man into a weapon against the Death Devil, who is inevitably going to show up.

We also the chaos caused by the Chainsaw Man Church, pulling off riots as a response to the coming of the Death Devil.

We also do not know what Fami’s game is. She has done nothing during this chapter but eat and let events play out.

Considering she is framed as Part 2’s main antagonist, Fami might use her one Primal Devil and other unseen means to either acquire Denji again or find an alternate path to stall the Death Devil.

She is still plenty mysterious, so we are not sure what her future for humanity is.

My guess is that since she is one of the Four Horsemen, we will see her ideological frame more in this arc or the next, if there is one.

Fujimoto has not announced a final arc yet.

Yoru wants war for the sake of survival and to regain her dignity, which might be happening with all the trouble she is involved with: from the Chainsaw Man Church riots to the use of the Gun and Tank Devils potentially sparking an interest in high-powered weaponry.

Fami controls people with hunger yet she herself does not want to lose her love for food in a world without humans.

And the Death Devil sounds like something no one wants: a world of total death, since humans are the sources of devils except probably for the Primal Fears like Death.

Regardless of what happens this arc, it appears that this or the next arc will bring out the worst and most powerful Devil in the Chainsaw Man universe.

This is going to be troubling as even though Denji was able to defeat a Horseman (Makima, the Control Devil), not a single character has done any lasting damage on a single Primal Devil.

The Darkness, Falling and Aging Devils are still alive and have not been significantly defeated per se.

The Falling Devil is only “weaker” by virtue of Fami starving this Devil to be controlled and it is clear that Fami cannot affect the Death Devil the same way. Perhaps the Death Devil lacks hunger or any need for sustenance to begin with (would the Aging Devil be the same?).

The Aging Devil is trapped in its own dimension and is unable to intervene, unless the Aging Devil can choose or is able to leave the prison of its own making.

But none of these conclusions give us an idea that Denji and Yoru have a chance of doing anything to the Death Devil.

Considering that Pochita ate parts of Yoru the War Devil and war slowly faded from reality, it might as well be possible that weaponizing Denji as the eraser of devils would be the only chance humanity has to survive the Age of Devils.

We also have to consider that in this part of the Academy Saga, Denji has lost everyone except for Asa (and Yoru).

These are the only connections he can make.

He is lonely now.
