Two Fumiko Mifune? Chainsaw Man Chapter 189 Review!

Fumiko Mifune seems to be getting a lot of attention the more she is hated.

In the previous Chainsaw Man chapter, Hirofumi Yoshida enters Aging’s World and allies himself with Denji and Asa/Yoru to leave the dimension, using Denji’s stomach network as a portal to the real world.

Chainsaw Man Chapter 189 is titled “Heart Pass, Octopus”

This chapter has 15 pages.

The chapter begins immediately with Yoshida’s plan failing and even Yoru’s Gun Devil blast not working.

Now, Aging mimics the War Devil’s “Bang” command but this actually ages Yoru into an old lady, albeit not really changing her appearance too much.

Instead, she gains wrinkles.

Yoru reenters Aging’s World and asks the boys if she is still beautiful, with both of them saying “Yes” and Denji calling her “cute”.

It seems Yoru cares about her appearance, indicating a level of humanity deeper than even her one-note relationship with her adopted devil children.

Pochita eventually does slice up Aging’s head but the head commands Fumiko Mifune to give her large intestine, a massive price that results in instant regeneration, even if the removal of the head would not be bothersome, except of course that Aging wants to be eaten whole by Chainsaw Man.

But as Aging talks about agreeing with Yoshida’s assessment of hostility being fruitless, someone steps forward that surprises Aging.

Another Fumiko Mifune.

Note here that Mifune is only talking to Aging directly or maybe about herself, musing over her body’s durability.

Here, Mifune reveals she was not actually all that into Aging’s goals of being eaten by Chainsaw Man either, saying that she promised herself that she would only side with the likeliest winner.

The dying Mifune from before calls out to Yoshida, telling him to use her heart, which he does and summons the Octopus Devil, who emerges out of the building as the head of a giant woman with tentacles.

What is Fumiko Mifune?

The most hated character of Chainsaw Man is a delightful puzzle within this chapter.

There is something really strange about Mifune here because it seems that, for all intents and purposes, she is human.

Her body actually suffered the Aging Devil’s contract prices yet either Mifune’s soul or manifested other self seems to treat this quite casually.

Mifune does share similarities with Akane Sawatari, who had a contract with the Snake Devil, particularly in their strange eyes.

Even Aging Devil, a Primal Fear who pre-exists humanity, is bewildered by the existence of Mifune.

Yet Yoshida seems to know, as shown by his immediate willingness to sacrifice Mifune’s heart, indicating their arrangement.

He was swallowed by Pochita alongside the Octopus Devil, which could have indicated that he is part of, if not the actual Octopus Devil but through Mifune

There must be a deeper plot.

Considering that technically, Yoshida works for Fami’s cause of stopping both Denji’s normal life and the Age of Devils, this might mean that Yoshida is a whole other player whose nature is foreign to both a Primal Fear and a Horseman of the Apocalypse.

However, now that Yoshida is with Denji, Mifune is just switching sides for the hell of it.

Her line suggests that she has faith that Yoshida will win, specifically Yoshida and not just the powerhouse duo of Chainsaw Man and the War Devil.

What does Yoshida and his Octopus Devil have that could match a Primal Fear?

Octopus and Doll Network Similarities

Another way to think about it would be that Mifune is like Santa Claus, a hive mind network of dolls connected to the Doll Devil.

Both Octopus and Doll Devils have components or arms that could very well be treated as the individuals themselves, as we never hear from the Doll Devil after Santa Claus’ defeat.

Then again, it would be strange for Fujimoto not to acknowledge the fusion of two devils: the Doll Devil, whether through the pawn of Santa Claus or its actual self being that pawn, and the flesh of the Darkness Devil, thus creating a contradiction to the common idea that the woman called Santa Claus is the Doll Devil itself.

Mifune and Yoshida are humans, dolls if we use the Santa Claus analogy, who are extensions of the Octopus Devil thanks to their contract.

However, only Yoshida has a direct link via contract to the Octopus Devil while so far, Mifune has no contract with the Octopus Devil and instead asks Yoshida to sacrifice her heart for the Octopus Devil’s emergence.

It looks like Mifune is a human who has made an agreement, not so much a devil contract, with another human.

This is interesting since Mifune’s whole motivation is to see the human race evolve to match devils so that they will not be made extinct during the inevitable Age of Devils.

If Mifune and Yoshida are humans of a different nature, does that not mean that they have already accomplished that goal or is there something missing, such as the supernatural ties of the devils to the fears of humanity, or even a means to control or overcome the fear that crated devils in the first place.

Based on how the second Mifune talked about her body, we are expected to treat the “original” Mifune as her own body, which fits the Santa Claus or Doll Devil analogy.

Alternatively, it could be a twin sister or a group of people who assume or tie their identity to the mask of Mifune.

There is one more interesting possibility, that the Aging Devil is seeing this themselves and that the Mifune before them is a projection or even a soul.

Is there a soul or spirit devil somewhere?

Anyway, this projection or soul seems to be speaking only to the Aging Devil while the body is unable to

This might be part of the Aging Devil’s nature as its goal is for humanity to grow up and mature, such that they use their time to gain wisdom.

Perhaps this is the sort of wisdom the Aging Devil just received, something new, like the emergence of the soul.

Note that the second Mifune was only perceived by the Aging Devil.

Yoshida would have no clue that

Also the back illustration of Volume 19 shows Mifune looking at some house plants just like the ones featured in the volume cover itself.

Mifune is leaning to see them, to convey either that she was just passing by and was curious by them, likely indicating her flux nature shown in this chapter or that her nature is akin to a plant.

In any case, Mifune is one of the most unusual humans in the story, maybe tied with Santa Claus.

Santa Claus herself had a short life, with only half a year left to live, which must have fueled her desperation to try and kill Makima, almost the same way Mifune is desperate to end the Aging Devil and usher in a new age of humanity.

This chapter seems to both have a simple explanation but also.

The Octopus Devil emerges with the face of a woman and Mifune’s heart was used as a catalyst for the Octopus Devil’s involvement.
