What Is The Jougan In Boruto? Origins, Powers Explained.
Boruto: Naruto the Next Generation is the sequel to the critically acclaimed Naruto series. Following the story of Boruto, Naruto’s son, we continue our journey in the shinobi world.
Boruto is continuing the tradition of introducing new powers, especially Dojutusu so far. So today, we are going to explain Boruto’s new dojutsu, Jougan!
Known only to the Otsutsuki clan, Jougan, literally meaning “Pure Eye”, is a unique dojutsu. Making its debut in the Boruto series, many Otsutsuki clan members like Momoshiki and Urashiki consider it to be a threat!
In the manga, the dojutsu is featureless in appearance with a barely visible pupil. Whereas, in the anime, the Jougan eye is blue with a darkened sclera and a visible pupil.
Jougan Origins:
Known only to the Otsutsuki clan, Jougan, literally meaning “Pure Eye” is a unique dojutsu. Otsutsukis like Momoshiki have called it troublesome too. In the manga, the dojutsu is featureless in appearance with a barely visible pupil whereas, in the anime, Jougan’s eye is blue in color with a darkened sclera and a visible pupil.
Our best guess would be that the Jougan is an ancient dojutsu exclusive to the Otsutsuki Clan, donned by a strong Otsutsuki years ago!
How did Boruto awaken the Jougan?
In the anime, Boruto awakened the Jougan during his fight against Nue with Mitsuki. Much like other Dojutsu awakenings in the series, this was involuntary. No clear reason behind the awakening of the eye has been given so far.
However, we speculate that Toneri Otsutsuki was the catalyst behind this awakening. The Otsutsuki visited Boruto through a prophetic dream, informing him that the road ahead of him will be tough. And, to survive this journey, Boruto needs to tap into his hidden potential as soon as possible, calling the eye the “Star of Hope”.
Toneri was somehow able to fasten the process of awakening the Jougan, possibly due to the Dojutsu’s Otsutsuki roots. The reason we say that Toneri was a “catalyst” is that Boruto technically has the genes to awaken Otsutsuki’s powers!
His father, Naruto is the reincarnation of Asura and his mother Hinata Hyuga is the descendant of Hamura Otsutsuki! Hinata has even received Hamura’s chakra directly in Naruto: The Last Movie!
It is popularly known that Hamura’s chakra has been passed down for generations in the Otsutsuki and the Hyuga clan. This makes it possible for Boruto to awaken Otsutsuki Clan’s powers under the right conditions!
Jougan Powers and Abilities:
- It can sense negative emotions, in a way similar to Naruto’s ability to sense such emotions and even see spirits. For example, Nue’s form when it absorbs negative chakra, and Momoshiki’s soul is invisible to others!
- Much like the Byagukan, Boruto can see the chakra pathway system and determine its key points. The eye also allows him to perceive the flow of the chakra.
- It also allows Boruto to see the invisible barriers that connect different dimensions. With the eye, Boruto can at least influence dimensional portals. This might develop into an ability to open interdimensional portals over time.
