The Mangekyo Sharingan is one of the most powerful and dangerous dojutsu (eye technique) in the Naruto franchise, being an evolved form of the Sharingan of the Uchiha Clan that comes as a result of powerful emotions, usually traumatic grief and hatred.

With Sarada Uchiha joining the list, let us look at all the Mangekyo Sharingan we have seen across both anime and manga forms.

Mangekyo Sharingan Without Displayed Unique Abilities

Izanagi Abusers: Baru, Rai and Naka Uchiha

In the anime, as Itachi placed Kabuto Yakushi under Izanami, there was a flashback showing past Uchiha during the Warring States Period fighting among each other for control of the clan.

Two of them were named, Rai and Baru Uchiha, with the former being killed by the latter, to show the abusive and pointless use of Izanagi.

Rai’s Mangeyko looked while Baru’s appeared as a simple triangle with curves next to each of the triangle’s side.

To note, Izanagi does not require the evolved form of the Sharingan but the fact they barely even use the specific abilities of their Mangekyo show that their power lust kept them from developing any jutsu.

A later generation would also show another Izanagi abuser, Naka Uchiha, who bore a Mangekyo Sharingan with a red three-pointed pinwheel pattern and like the previous two, he did not display any unique jutsu.

Naori Uchiha

Naori was one of the earliest users of the Izanami, the illusion that traps Izanagi users in a perpetual loop until they reform, which she used to stop Naka from abusing the Izanagi.

Like the other three, Naori did not show any particular jutsu of her own.

Izuna Uchiha

Now we enter the canon Mangekyo Sharingan users.

Considered one of the first to awaken the Mangekyo Sharingan, at least in recorded history (or manga canon), Izuna was Madara Uchiha’s younger brother and a rival of the future Second Hokage, Tobirama Senju.

Like the previous placers, Izuna also did not show any unique jutsu but we could see how strong Izuna’s Mangekyo would be to challenge Tobirama and be considered Madara’s equal in their early days as leaders of the Uchiha.

Fugaku Uchiha

fugaku uchiha

In the anime adaptation of the Itachi Shinden light novels, it is revealed that Sasuke and Itachi’s father, Fugaku, awakened a Mangekyo Sharingan after losing a friend during the Third Great Ninja War.

This Mangekyo has three dots within three curves spiralling counter-clockwise around the pupil.

Although this Mangekyo has no special abilities, the Uchiha Clan leader was confident he could tame the Nine-Tails with it and as such, hid this power from his own clan.

Mangekyo Sharingan That Displayed Unique Abilities

Sarada Uchiha

sarada uchiha

The most recent person to awaken the Mangekyo Sharingan, Sarada is the second Mangekyo user of the Boruto series and in Chapter 20 of the Boruto: Two Blue Vortex manga, we see her ability in the form of a Space-Time tunnel that was able to warp away Ryu’s Iron Sand  lathed to her body.

Sarada’s sun-like Mangekyo Sharingan is unique in that, like her Sharingan, it was awakened out of love, in this case immense worry over Boruto’s fate after Omnipotence made him out to be the bad guy who killed his father Naruto.

As e have only one demonstration of her Mangekyo ability while considering her potential moving forward, this would be a good spot as any for the young Uchiha.

Shin Uchiha

Shin-Uchiha

Introduced in the Naruto Gaiden story and the prequel to Boruto, Shin is the only person here to awaken a Mangekyo Sharingan without any Uchiha genetics or connections.

This is due to his unique genetic makeup that would adapt and meld with any DNA without rejection, which resulted in him “becoming an Uchiha” through Orochimaru’s experimentation.

As the source of Danzo’s right arm of ten Sharingan, Shin would have multiple Sharingan all over his body with his right eye and be connected to a Sharingan-spying creature that can work with Shin to activate a Space-Time Ninjutsu for teleportation purposes.

Shin somehow awakened his Mangekyo Sharingan, whether through some Itachi-related trauma or it being already awakened by the original holder.

This Mangekyo uses Object Manipulation, which allows Shin to mark a target with his left hand and control its movements with such precision that he was able to perform transplant surgery on himself through the movement of scalpels and blades.

His Mangekyo is also unique in that it is shared among multiple individuals, primarily his clone sons, who can also be manipulated by the ability.

Shisui Uchiha

shisui uchiha

Also known as the Teleporter, Shisui’s Mangekyo Sharingan ability in both eyes is the Kotoamatsumaki, the most powerful genjutsu in that it can bring someone under his eyes’ control without them being aware of the process.

Danzo coveted Shisui’s eyes and managed to retrieve the right eye, having used it to manipulate the Land of Iron’s General Mifune to favor him during the Five Kage Summit.

Meanwhile, Shisui bequeathed his left eye to Itachi before his death and Itachi would transplant it on one of his crows.

However, the main flaw of this ability is that it takes 10 years to recharge, with Itachi waiting until before his death to use it as a last resort to avert Sasuke’s vengeful path in the event he found out the truth of the Uchiha Clan Massacre.

This was averted by Danzo’s acquisition of Hashirama Senju’s cells, which cut the time from 10 years to one or so uses in a single day.

In the Naruto Shippuden video games, Shisui would also show the ability to awaken his own Susanoo, a green specter that could use drill-like spears as weapons and can also use Tsukumo to open its ribcage and unleash a barrage of needles. This also has a Perfect Body form.

Itachi Uchiha

The man to introduce the very concept of the Mangekyo Sharingan, Itachi would awaken the iconic three-pointed shuriken Mangekyo after seeing Shisui’s death.

Itachi’s first Mangekyo Sharingan jutsu was the formidable Tsukuyomi genjutsu, which can allow him to cast an illusion that can compress days or even a lifetime into a single moment, usually for torture, and is the only genjutsu that could kill a person.

Both Kakashi and Sasuke were hospitalized for days as a result of being put through the Tsukuyomi.

Itachi’s right eye held the Amaterasu, the black flames that burn the target until it was completely destroyed at the cost of making his eye bleed, and it is the ability that Sasuke would inherit.

By awakening the full powers of both eyes, Itachi would also be the first to show the Susanoo, an ethereal guardian that also possessed two unique artifacts: the Totsuka Blade that could seal anything within its gourd-like handle and the Yata Mirror that can deflect any attack.

Itachi’s Susano’o can also throw the Yasaka Magatama as his long-ranged attack and can reach its half-body Armored Form in life.

This Susanoo can also and Itachi can at least use , although some games show him use the Perfect Body Form he could pull off in life due to his illness.

Indra Otsutsuki

indra otsutsuki

The ancestor of the Uchiha would be the first person historically to awaken a Mangekyo Sharingan and it was through the murder of his two supporters, which might have inspired the myths, and thus the brutality of the Uchiha who sought its power.

Indra’s Mangekyo originally resembled but not before it was retconned to resemble Sasuke’s Mangekyo Sharingan, such that he could even use Hinokagutsuchi, a prototype Amaterasu with a name resembling Sasuke’s Flame Control or Kagutsuchi ability of his right eye, and even awaken a similar-looking purple Susanoo.

Obito Uchiha

What brings Obito near the top of the list is his ability, Kamui, which has proven to be one of the most broken techniques in the series.

Obito’s right eye allows him to use close-ranged Kamui to teleport himself and those he touches but, most of all, to make himself slip through objects by sending affected parts of his body into Kamui.

Due to Obito’s sacrifice, his friend Kakashi Hatake would possess his left eye, which would simultaneously awaken through proximity with the traumatized Obito after witnessing Kakashi stab their teammate Rin Nohara with a Chidori.

Obito’s left eye uses a long-ranged Kamui that can teleport people and objects without contact and due to its separated nature, Kakashi acts as the natural counter to Obito’s Kamui, from canceling Obito’s jutsu to even transporting people and attacks to the shared dimension to attack Obito’s body when he becomes intangible.

Through Kakashi, Obito’s two eyes were able to manifest a Perfect Susanoo, a blue warrior with Kakashi’s left eye scar with the ability to create Kamui Shuriken, which can warp a target away with their own Kamui vortex.

Put together, Obito’s teleportation speed is doubled, allowing for near-instant teleportation fast enough to outmaneuver Ten-Tails Jinchuriki Madara’s Truth-Seeking Balls, as well as the ability to open portals to connect to other dimensions, provided there is a portal already open for the synchronization.

However, this process is the one time Obito’s eyes bleed even with his Hashirama cells, which is the purported reason why Obito continues to spam his Kamui without fatigue and makes him among the best Mangekyo users in the series.

Madara Uchiha

Madara-Uchiha

The first person in recorded Naruto history to awaken the Mangekyo Sharingan, Madara Uchiha was also the first to attain the Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan after transplanting his brother’s eyes.

Although we do not know the specific abilities of each eye, he was able to awaken the Perfect Susanoo and it is considered one of the most powerful things in Naruto, such that it equaled a Tailed Beast in terms of raw destructive power and was capable of shrouding the Nine Tails Kurama like armor via Majestic Attire: Susanoo when Madara controlled the Nine Tails.

From being used to summon two meteors to destroying a whole mountain with a single slash, Madara’s Susanoo was feared for its terrifying chakra.

Although one video game displayed what appeared to be a rewind ability similar to Urashiki’s Rinnegan, this is still disputed and even its nature has not been properly acknowledged by the developers or by Kishimoto himself.

This would also be the first Mangekyo Sharingan to develop into a Rinnegan after Madara transplanted Hashirama’s flesh into his wound and letting the years go by.

Hagoromo Otsutsuki

The first person to awaken the Mangekyo Sharingan, at least in the anime, the Sage of Six Paths would simultaneously evolve his Sharingan with the Rinnegan after nearly losing and subsequently rescuing his twin brother Hamura from their mother Kaguya’s control.

While he does not have his unique jutsu or the Mangekyo pattern, he was the first person to awaken the Susano’o, which signified mastery of both eyes and the awakening of the Mangekyo’s full power.

This blue Susanoo was strong enough to contend with Kaguya and the Ten-Tails formed from her Divine Tree.

Keep in mind this Susanoo lacked the Tailed Beast chakra that Sasuke would use to gain his Susanoo’s strongest form yet it was able to contend with the Ten Tails and Kaguya.

Sasuke Uchiha

sasukes-mangekyou-sharingan1

After Madara, Sasuke would become the second Uchiha to transplant his brother’s eyes and awaken the Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan, maintaining the Mangekyo’s full power after having abused it thoroughly within the span of a few days.

What puts Sasuke above both Madara and Hagoromo is the combination of his innovative Mangekyo Sharingan and the full power of his Susanoo through Tailed Beast chakra.

Sasuke’s Mangekyo Sharingan would inherit Itachi’s Amaterasu but with the right eye, Sasuke would develop Kagatsuchi or Flame Control, the ability to shape the Amaterasu flames into any form he saw fit, from wrapping it around his sword to the arrows or projectiles or his Susanoo or even as a shield to protect himself.

Flame Control was such an innovative technique that it synchronized well with Naruto’s Wind Style: Massive Rasenshuriken to form the Scorch Style: Nimbus Tempest

Sasuke would also develop the Susanoo, which was noted for its cold, dark chakra, and during the final stages of the fourth Great Ninja War, Sasuke would acquire the Perfect Susanoo and was able to using the Majestic Attire

With the Six Paths Yin Chakra, Sasuke was able to awaken the Rinnegan on his left eye, which also allowed his Susanoo to gain immunity from the light of Madara’s Infinite Tsukuyomi, protecting Team 7 from its effects.

Acknowledged by Kurama’s Yin Half to have surpassed the Sage of Six Paths himself, Sasuke would manifest a Full Body Susanoo dubbed the “Indra Susanoo” that would lose some of its armor after absorbing much chakra from the nine Tailed Beasts, revealing a humanoid face and figure made of lightning.

This was able to launching Indra’s Arrow, which Sasuke considered his strongest offensive jutsu and together with Naruto’s Six Paths: Massive Rasenshuriken (a combination of his Massive Shuriken and Tailed Beast Ball Rasenshuriken), was able to level the entire Valley of the End.
