One Piece: Explaining All Of Luffy’s Gears In Explicit Detail!

Luffy’s Gears are special and unique in their own ways. And Gear 5 is the epitome of Luffy’s freedom, the state of being he was looking for!

ONE PIECE © 1997 by Eiichiro Oda/SHUEISHA Inc.

Monkey D. Luffy has already become one of Shonen’s most iconic characters. I mean, he has made his mark by appearing on Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade in 2023 but is he still more iconic than Goku? Maybe not, but do you know who is? Luffy’s Gear 5.

Just kidding, please don’t attack me.

Luffy has just shown how BUSTED his Gear 5 is, and according to Kaido, it’s like he has 2 different DEVIL FRUITS!

But what if I told you that Oda gave us hints to this from the very beginning. Yep! The idea of Luffy’s Fruit being more than just a paramecia was thrown at us early as chapter 387.

Now tell me which other paramecia devil fruit user has multiple different forms.

THAT’S RIGHT! NO ONE ELSE!

In Fact Zoans are the only ones who have shown forms of transformation, from Tony Tony Chopper, to even other users who transition between their hybrid to a fully fledged embodiment of their Zoan, such as Yamamoto, Kaido and even Marco.

Whereas Luffy’s Fruit changes his entire DNA, without even turning it on like a switch, he is always rubber.

Before gear 5 we might have thought his fruit was a special paramecia like Katakuri, but their fruits are completely apart. Katakuri has shown us that his body is not Mochi all the time,
Unlike luffy he can turn it off as we saw when he stabbed his own leg and blood came gushing out instead of mochi.

So with that, Luffy being a Zoan was pretty set from the beginning, but what other clues did Oda give us?

Well let’s start with Gear 1.

Luffy Gear 1

Unleashing the true power : Why is Luffy so Strong ?

Gear 1 is Luffy in base form, is the simplest application of his power which is the ability to stretch in any way he wants, on top incorporating all properties of rubber to his entire body.

This includes immunity to electricity, blunt forces and with some creativity, Luffy is able to utilize the property to increase the overall impact of his attacks by stretching his body to then rely on the sharp recoil.

This is the purest form of Luffy’s paramecia abilities. Yes, although the Nika Fruit is a Mythical Zoan, as Kaido stated it’s like nothing we have seen before, as it exhibits paramecia like effects.

Even with its awakening, Luffy has both the Zoan boost, of advanced strength, durability and recovery, along with the paramecia effect of sharing his abilities to the surrounding, where he ends up making everything into rubber or cartoon like.

However, the difference between other paramecia awakening is that Luffy can even affect living beings on top of the inanimate surroundings.

So, becoming rubber-like is just a part of the fruit’s base power on top of Luffy’s ability to awaken and transform into sungod Nika which we’ll talk about later…

Luffy Gear 2

When Does Luffy Use Gear 2 in One Piece? Anime and Manga, Explained | Attack of the Fanboy

The form that even sports stars imitate! Luffy’s Gear 2 is an extraordinary ability that allows him to pump blood rapidly throughout his body. This increased blood flow delivers more oxygen and nutrients to his cells at an accelerated rate, providing a significant boost in strength and speed. This process has been likened to doping by Lucci, as it artificially enhances Luffy’s abilities rather than relying on natural growth.

This remarkable feat is possible because Luffy’s organs and blood vessels are made of rubber, allowing them to endure the intense expansion and contraction without damage. As a result, Luffy can vastly improve his physical capabilities, enabling him to outpace the Rokushiki technique Shave, a skill that typically requires years of rigorous training to master.

The extreme acceleration afforded by Gear 2 gives Luffy the power to generate immense force, enabling him to break through the “Iron Body” technique effortlessly. In one instance, Luffy even managed to overpower Blackbeard with a single punch, despite Blackbeard having previously defeated Ace.

However, Gear 2 comes with significant drawbacks. The rapid consumption of nutrients means Luffy burns through oxygen, energy, and food at an alarming rate. This can leave him extremely hungry or even temporarily paralyzed. The most serious consequence, as noted by Rob Lucci, is the strain on Luffy’s life force. The accelerated blood flow forces his heart to work much harder, putting his health at risk.

To mitigate these risks, Luffy learned from Rayleigh to use Gear 2 in shorter bursts instead of maintaining it constantly during fights. This adaptation has greatly improved Luffy’s stamina management, reducing the strain on his body post-timeskip. Additionally, Luffy’s mastery of Haki has enabled him to perform advanced techniques like Red Hawk, where his fists ignite with fire due to the incredible speed and force of his punches. Interestingly, Luffy has been able to use Red Hawk even underwater, suggesting that its fiery effect stems from the true nature of his Devil Fruit powers, combined with his imagination.

Gear 2 can be seen as a precursor to Luffy’s actual awakening. Zoan Awakenings typically grant users enhanced speed, strength, and durability. By developing Gear 2, Luffy effectively achieved a third of these benefits through sheer ingenuity, setting the stage for his future transformations.

Luffy Gear 3

The complete list : When does Luffy use Gear 3 ?

While Gear 2 focuses on speed and impact, Gear 3 is all about sheer mass and power. This transformation allows Luffy to inflate the bones in a specific limb, significantly increasing its size and destructive capability. By enhancing his fists with armament and conqueror’s Haki, along with Ryuo, Luffy can deliver even more potent attacks.

Initially, before the time skip, using Gear 3 came with a major drawback: Luffy would shrink to the size of a small child. However, through rigorous training, he managed to overcome this limitation.

Despite its impressive power, the mechanics of Gear 3 are quite fantastical. The way Luffy activates this form—by blowing highly compressed air into his bones—is almost cartoonish. The idea of pushing air through his thumb and then decompressing into a tiny child, with even his clothes shrinking, stretches the bounds of believability.

The explanation for this bizarre ability lies in the power of imagination granted by Sun God Nika. Luffy’s belief that “bigger is better” allows him to achieve this transformation. Interestingly, Gear 3 shares a consequence with Gear 5: after depleting his energy, Luffy shrivels up into a frail, old man.

Luffy’s techniques are often inspired by the abilities and fighting styles of others he has encountered. For example, his Gomu Gomu no Pistol was inspired by witnessing Shanks and his crew shooting bandits. Gear 2 incorporates the Rokushiki technique shave, Red Roc was influenced by Ace, and Gear 3 drew inspiration from the giants he met in Little Garden.

During his training with Rayleigh in Rusukaina, Luffy encountered wild beasts that inspired the creation of his next transformation: Gear 4. This ongoing evolution of his abilities highlights Luffy’s incredible imagination and adaptability, crucial elements of his true power.

Luffy Gear 4

Gear 4 is about combining everything that Luffy has learned so far, pushing his devil fruit and Haki to its limits.

This sequential progress is seen as Luffy activates Gear 4 in a similar manner to Gear 3.

He does it by blowing into his body, but instead of the thumb it’s his arm this time.

The difference here is that he inflates his muscular structure instead and distributes the air a bit more evenly as opposed to gear 3. He then imbues himself with Armament Haki as his whole body becomes inflated.

Which brings to the first form of his Gear 4: BOUND MAN!

Boundman/Bounce-man

One Piece" Gear Fourth! Kyoui no Bounce Man! (TV Episode 2016) - IMDb

With this Luffy becomes like a rubber ball that causes him to bounce endlessly! While Focusing more on compression and force by utilizing Haki to add a layer of resistance.

With that in mind, Luffy reimagined all of his original techniques incorporating them in his new found power.

For example, Luffy’s finishing blow “Gumo Gumo no Bazooka” is modified as the “Leo Bazooka” which has more impact but Luffy has to close the distance to land this attack.

Which he achieves by becoming more spring-like, boosting his speed and unlocking flight!

Once again, Luffy has quite shamelessly stolen another power from a different devil fruit… Bellamy’s!

HOwever, Luffy actually improved upon it and applied this spring like nature to more facets than just mobility by joining it with his attacks as well.

The ability to do anything the user wants paired with Luffy’s great imagination is what allows him to essentially utilize all kinds of powers he wants into his own fruit ability.

This was also the case when gear 5 Luffy turned into a literal giant in his fight against Kaido, essentially emulating San Juan Wolf’s devil fruit, the deka deka no mi even if he had never seen him.

Luffy just got this idea from seeing other giants simply exist and realized the potential of his gear 3 but applied it to his whole body

As long as he can imagine it, he can recreate almost any devil fruit power and even improve upon them.

Bellamy was only able to bounce on walls and floors whereas Luffy is straight up able to fly using the very same ability.

Luffy’s speed becomes incomparable as he flies across the distance of towns in just a few seconds (episode 726) and even appears behind Doflamingo despite him being on guard.

As this flight is based on the ability to bounce, Luffy is able to redirect and have great control over where and how he flies, which is one other other thing that Luffy shamelessly stole!

Yep we’ve seen before and it’s the Rokushiki technique Geppo.

It’s essentially just kicking the air many times in one instance to fly, but this works far better with Luffy’s elastic body.

Reinforcing just HOW ingrained the aspect of IMAGINATION is to not only his fruit power but also his fighting style.

Luffy’s insane creativity is what allowed him to even come with his next few variations of Gear 4 one being Tankman!

Its sole purpose is to increase the defense of Luffy by … eating food?

Yup. After Luffy has… fattened himself up, he becomes the main weapon, utilizing the recoil of others attacks to bounce them off him. But the main drawback to this form is the lackluster mobility and great offense when compared to other forms.

Despite how strong Gear 4 is, there’s some drawbacks like the insane depletion of luffy Haki reserves, this limits the time he can use this form, along with a cooldown of 10 minutes before he can use his Haki again.

But with the FINAL form of Gear 4, Luffy doesn’t need much time to body his opponents, with SNAKEMAN.

Snakeman

If Boundman was inspired by gorillas, Snakeman well yea we don’t need to go there, but this form focuses much more on speed and offense, while giving up on defense.

In exchange, Luffy experiences a great increase in attack speed and power. The attack “Python” becomes greatly enhanced as Luffy is able to not only just retain the speed that his arms have whilst stretching and redirecting, but as they continue to stretch and turn, they even accelerate!

This means that even if an opponent dodges his attacks, the punches will only grow stronger and stronger before finally landing an extremely devastating blow.

With Snakeman, Luffy is able to use other attacks that he normally can’t in Bounceman, one of them being Hydra.

Hydra is a variation of Python and his Black Mamba attacks, which essentially uses rapid fire punches together with the accelerating and bending of his arms to land powerful hits at an incredible rate.

But what truly makes Hydra stand out from the other two is the usage of advanced observation Haki, or future sight. This makes it so that Luffy can pin down whoever his opponent is and barrage them with the most unpredictable omni-directional attacks possible!

An attack like this makes it hard for any opponent to even move!

This was even true for Kaido, despite his exceptional fighting capabilities he not only got injured but even started bleeding.

Let me remind you that Kaido is quite literally the toughest character in the whole of One Piece, there’s only a few ways someone can actually damage him, and the fact that this attack hurt Kaido that badly should prove how effective it was.

But what’s interesting is that Kaido talks about how little sense it makes for rubber to be able to change trajectory given its nature.

Rubber is all about elasticity and that means that anytime it’s stretched it retracts.

To endlessly stretch like Gear 4 does makes no sense and the truth is that this is a result of GEAR 5!

In fact, Gear 4 releases steam which wrap around his neck like a scarf, just like it does for some other Zoans and as it does in Gear 5, showcasing that Gear 4 was just one of the stepping stones on a long path to achieve what the true nature of Luffy’s devil fruit is, even if he had no idea.

All in all, Luffy’s Devil Fruit ability allows him to produce effects only limited by what he has experienced. This has always been the case.

Luffy has seen guns, riffles, giants, later crazy strong animals, and then even stronger fighters he faced off against.

All of these life experiences helped Luffy’s creativity and allowed his body to mold into what is needed to achieve the effect Luffy wants.

Luffy Gear 5

TOP 10 : Les Attaques du Gear 5 de Luffy

This moves us on the Awakening of the Nika Model Hito Hito No Mi. When Luffy activates Gear 5, his heart beats loudly in a rhythmic pattern known as the “drums of liberation,” a state Joy Boy also experienced 800 years ago. This transformation enhances Luffy’s strength and speed without damaging his rubber heart, similar to the effects of Hodi’s pills.

In Gear 5, Luffy’s appearance changes—his hair and clothes turn white, his eyes gain white ring-like pupils, and white clouds float around his neck. Utilizing his Haki, Luffy extends the power of his fruit to his surroundings, showcasing its paramecia-like properties. During his battle with Kaido, he bent the ground like rubber, stretched Kaido, and even turned space particles into rubber to walk on air. He also caught and threw lightning like Zeus.

Gear 5 also transforms Luffy’s surroundings into a gag comic book, making affected characters exhibit cartoonish effects, such as eyes popping out. Kaido described it as “something out of a comic strip.” Luffy’s Zoan nature grants him increased power, speed, durability, and recovery, making him a literal giant capable of incredible feats without prior preparation.

The Nika Fruit by far is the strongest ability in the series, as it is only limited by its users imagination and Haki, where the latter is the fuel for its power, as shown in Chapter 1047 when he gigantified his hands to the size of an island. Despite the immense power, Gear 5 has a drawback: Luffy reverts to an old man after use but returns to normal in about 32 seconds.

This fruit embodies the will of Nika, resonating with Luffy’s journey to liberate the oppressed and spread joy, reflecting the true nature of the Hito Hito no Mi, Model Nika.
