Chainsaw Man Has the Most Read Chapter In 2024
Shueisha has listed the top 10 most read manga chapters of the year and Chainsaw Man is at the top for a very obvious reason.
On December 24, 2024, Mangaplus, the official manga reading platform for Shueisha, published their top 10 most read chapters of the year.
This list is notable for having of some of the most controversial chapters of the current decade.

10. MAD 1
Title: Invasion
Release date:Â June 19, 2024
The alien invader trope has always been a mainstay in sci-fi stories but not when we immediately begin in an apocalyptic wasteland where the survivors of the invasion struggle to live.
The protagonist, John, is a human with superhuman strength to contend with the aliens and also learns of a settlement called Jericho where the survivors form a society.
Along with the external conflict is the appearance of John’s sister, Emma, who seems bizarrely placed compared to th rest of the survivor group with John.
The opening chapter is gripping with its simple yet provocative art style, horrific premise, and comprehensive plotting.
Not to mention that MAD’s opening chapter is a whopping 125 pages long, the longest first chapter to a manga series.
9. Hunter x Hunter 401
Title: Moonlight
Release date:Â October 7, 2024
The return of Hunter x Hunter garnered significant attention since this came after Yoshihiro Togashi’s longest recorded hiatus of 2 years, with the most recent chapter at the time having been released in 2022.
The chapter was also spectacular as it revealed a major secret: Beyond Netero, son of the former chairman Isaac Netero, had been fathering dozens of illegitimate children among the Kakin Royal Army and even a Prince of the Kakin Empire.
8. Oshi no Ko 166

The ending of Oshi no Ko would garner much controversy for not only killing off the male lead Aqua and not give him the good life he deserved but also for seemingly maintaining the same status quo of lies amidst a toxic idol industry as before.
In fact, Aqua’s absence has actually do more bad than good as it left a void in Kana, Akane, and Ruby’s lives and deprived Aqua of a chance to live beyond revenge or a fixation with his past life as the doctor.
In fact, this controversy was actually expected, if not intended as in an interview, Aka Akasaka, the writer, and Mengo Yokoyari, the artist, wanted to motivate heated debate and strong reactions among fans.
7. Drama Queen 1
Title:Â Who Needs Love When You’ve Got Rage?
Release date: December 1, 2024
This manga definitely lives up to its title.
In contrast to the premise of evil aliens that wiped out most of humanity on MAD, we have good aliens keeping humanity alive.
Aliens come to Earth after saving the planet from a devastating meteor and decide to settle in and even improve technology on the planet.
What could go wrong?
Well, the female lead, a factory worker named Nomamoto, is abused by her alien boss and sees the alien immigrants as invaders in spite of the seeming benefits of living together with aliens, including the way alien technology has improved quality of life on Earth and seemingly overreacts to the whole situation, hence the title.
This leads Nomamoto and another character, Kitami, to fight back against the aliens and to murder them on sight.
Drama Queen’s first chapter sparked intense debate over how exactly to read the series.
Many fans, particularly in the West, were alarmed by the anti-immigration and far right messaging of the story (the aliens are taking our jobs and such rhetoric), and indeed this even rallied support from such groups, noting that the manga is “saying it like it is”.
On the other hand, there were fans that more hopeful that the benevolent portrayal of the aliens even in spite of the protagonists’ hatred over them and their conspiracy theorist-like ramblings, such as how the aliens are hitting them from behind without any proof of it happening, as an example.
This is on top of the personalities of the lead, protagonists being quite uncouth.
6. Dragon Ball Super 102
Title: Son Goku vs Son Gohan
Release date: Feb 21, 2024
This sparring session between father and son saw an impressive clash between the two in their strongest forms: Beast Gohan and Ultra Instinct Goku.
Prior to this, we also saw the fight between Gohan and Goten and Trunks, with Gohan even being able to use Ultimate to show how much Goten and Trunks have grown as fighters.
5. One Piece 1117

What makes the chapter iconic for the year is how Vegapunk was so close to bringing up the secret of the Will of D, the clan considered to be the mortal enemies of the Celestial Dragons.
However, Warcury, one of the Five Elders of the World Government, would attack Emet the Iron Giant bearing the Transmission Snail, causing the broadcast to be interrupted and cut off.
Because of this interruption, some key information was lost and Vegapunk was unable to transmit this segment of the broadcast.
The world will never know what Vegapunk meant to say at that point.
4. My Hero Academia 430
Title: My Hero Academia

My Hero Academia’s ending would close an era of shonen manga and the discourse surrounding it would bring this chapter to its rank on this late.
Although Horikoshi wrote in quite an epilogue arc, some fans were dissatisfied with Deku’s decision to become a teacher instead of being a Pro-Hero, which the narration, of Deku becoming the greatest hero, was led to imply.
3. Boruto: Two Blue Vortex 9
Title: Nine Tails
Release date: June 20, 2024
It is no coincidence that this is the 9th chapter of the Boruto sequel.
This chapter revealed Kurama the Nine Tailed Fox of Naruto reincarnated its chakra inside Himawari, Naruto’s daughter.
After 3 years since sacrificing his life to let Naruto use Baryon Mode against Isshiki Otsutsuki, Kurama would lend power to the inexperienced Himawari, who is fighting against the incarnation of the Ten-Tails, Jura.
2. Jujutsu Kaisen Chapter 260

The Sukuna Showdown rages on as Sukuna tries to keep up with Aoi Todo’s vibraslap-empowered Boogie Woogie.
Before he could open his Domain again, Sukuna would see a familiar set of blue eyes amidst the dust clouds.
This chapter is famous for its surprising conclusion, which saw the apparent return of Satoru Gojo, who had been killed in Chapter 236, which was in last year.
1. Chainsaw Man 167
Title: Super Smooch
Release date: June 5, 2024
By far, the most controversial chapter of the year 2024, Chainsaw Man saw its protagonist Denji locking lips with Yoru, the War Devil that possessed Asa Mitaka, and culminating in the two making out.
The chapter is particularly controversial due to Denji experiencing the height of sexual victimization as, whether or not Yoru desired Denji at the time, Yoru had originally intended to weaponize Chainsaw Man.
Worst of all, this all happened while Denji looks for Nayuta, only that soem chapters later, after Denji loses his apartment home, his dogs, and his adopted little sister and reincarnated Control Devil Nayuta due to the actions of the Chainsaw Man Church, who wanted to bring back Chainsaw Man.
This was the single worst day of Denji’s life but the sexual content, as usual, stirred more than just sympathy for Denji’s situation.
