Since July 2023, the Lazarus TV Anime has been anticipated to join the roster of Studio MAPPA (Jujutsu Kaisen, Chainsaw Man, Attack on Titan: The Final Season) anime in the coming years.

On October 18, 2024, a new trailer was released

The trailer shows the protagonist Axel Gilberto walking down the futuristic streets and being targeted by authorities.

Axel begins running away and taking on the police, showing off the anime’s smooth fight choreography.

As Axel runs to the highway, a girl monitors his every move for the police and a blonde woman intercepts Axel on her motorcycle.

We see Axel being chased by police drones and navigating through the city with great parkour skills.

Lazarus is an original anime produced in Studio MAPPA and directed by Shinichiro Watanabe, famous for directing Cowboy Bebop in 1998 and has collaborated with MAPPA in the 2014 anime Terror in Resonance.

As such, this anime marks Watanabe’s return to MAPPA after ten years.

Notably, the anime will have Chad Stahelski, the director of the four John Wick films, as “action director”.

The series is confirmed to receive 13 episodes and will be released sometime in 2025.

In the IMDb summary, Lazarus is set in the year 2052 where humanity is freed from disease and pain, resulting in unprecedented peace and prosperity.

All of this is possible through Nobel Prize winning neuroscientist Dr. Skinner’s miracle cure-all drug, “Hapuna”, that has no apparent drawbacks.

However, once the drug is introduced, the doctor vanishes, only to resurface three years later with a warning: Hapuna has a short half-life, with those who have taken the drug set to die within three years.

To respond to this crisis, a special task force of five international agents called Lazarus seeks out Skinner to develop a vaccine before time runs out.
