Masashi Kishimoto is often praised for the writing behind Naruto and Sasuke’s dynamic and now we learn there is more to the story of anime’s greatest rivalry.

During the Kana event in France on August 25th, Kishimoto and Mikio Ikemoto were asked by the Le Journal de Mickey about how Boruto became a renegade when he swapped position with Kawaki via Ada’s Omnipotence.

Ikemoto: It’s not that Boruto is really a traitor. When his adventure began, his situation was the opposite of Naruto’s in the past. He had friends and a family. His main problem was an overly absent father. So he didn’t particularly have reasons to push himself. But since he’s the main character, we had to find a way to make him act. On the other hand, Kawaki has a situation similar to Naruto’s. I thought that switching the positions between Boruto and Kawaki would allow for better story progression. This is an idea I had relatively early on.

Kishimoto: In Naruto, there’s the rivalry between the protagonist and Sasuke. I’d already imagined a situation where their roles would’ve been reversed. So Ikemoto-sensei experimented with this idea. Through Boruto, I can see this change of roles, but as a reader. I fully enjoy it because I’m the first to be able to read the manga for making checks. Being Boruto’s first reader is a joy.

For any Naruto fan, they remember the Naruto vs Sasuke fight in the Samurai Bridge the during the Five Kages Summit Arc.

Naruto and Sasuke have a discussion about and Naruto considered what would happen if their places were switched, which is represented with the two switching their techniques: Sasuke holding a Rasengan while Naruto has the Chidori

The experiment brought up turns out to be the Omnipotence Arc, where Ada fulfills Kawaki’s wish after the Leaf hunts him down for supposedly killing Naruto, the Seventh Hokage.

Realizing the consequences of killing Boruto, Momoshiki’s vessel, to save the Leaf, Kawaki lets out his helplessness and frustration, which results in Ada subconsciously activating the full power of her Omnipotence to rewrite the world’s memories and switch Kawaki and Boruto’s positions.
