On November 20, 2024, we received the cover for Volume 42 of My Hero Academia.
With the title, “I am Here”, the final volume cover shows protagonist Izuku Midoriya with Class 1-A and calls back to the very first volume of My Hero Academia released on November 4, 2014.
Along with a shared yellow background, Deku takes All Might’s spot while his classmates are the Pro-Heroes and a new character, Dai, taking on the spot Deku filled at the start of the series.
If you notice, this is Deku in the All Might shirt that Aizawa gave him in Chapter 421: “We are Here” for the final battle against All for One.
This is in contrast to the Volume 1 image of All Might, who has maintained the facade of an almighty comics superhero ever since he sustained serious injuries from his battle with All for One.
Notice also that in Volume 1, the heroes are celebrities, such that the Pro-Heroes are in red instead of their distinct colors.
This depicts the change from a status quo defined by the Symbol of Peace, by one hero being the standard, to an era of recovery and renewal where the story of My Hero Academia becomes the story of how everyone became heroes.
The character of Dai in the middle of this image first appeared in Chapter 258: “Friends” at the start of the Paranormal Liberation War Arc as a much younger boy holding an Endeavor action figure.
In this news release, we also learn that the contents of the extra pages are in fact a NEW EPILOGUE, or ‘what lies beyond’ the final chapter!
From the 60 or so additional pages, 38 of them will be for the new epilogue that would extend Chapter 430: “My Hero Academia”, meaning its final page, which the volume cover is based on, will not be the end for My Hero Academia.
Last month, there has been speculation on the contents of the final volume’s additional pages as this will only covering Chapter 423 up to 430, a total of seven chapters.
It looks like we might get new content that will provide even more detail as to the goings-on in the My Hero Academia world or some unresolved matters, such as the relationship between the adults from Class 1-A and Deku, who ends the story as a teacher of UA High, or possibly looking into Deku’s performance with the new Support Gear.
Perhaps there could even be hints to the identity of Deku’s dad after all this time? Time will tell.
Volume 42 will be released on December 4, 2024.
