The Jump Festa 2025 Red Stage is full of exciting announcements but for One Piece, there are bittersweet moments.

On December 22, 2024 for the One Piece stage, Kazuki Yao officially announces his retirement from the role of the shipwright of the Thousand Sunny and one of the Straw Hat Pirates, Franky.

During the event, we meet the new voice of Franky, Subaru Kimura.

Kimura has done some notable roles, such as Aoi Todo from Jujutsu Kaisen and Takeshi “Gian” Goda in the Doraemon series, which happens to be his very first role in 2005 and is still voicing the character to this day.

As a gesture of passing the torch, Yao handed over red underwear, akin to how Shanks passed the Straw Hat to Luffy in the actual series.

Yao also teaches Kimura Franky’s signature “Super!” line and pose on stage.

Yao’s other roles, such as Jango, have been given to Wataru Takagi as of Episode 1121 that aired on October 6, 2024.

The year 2024 has seen two One Piece actors and a growing concern from the fanbase over the health and future of the seiyus of the Straw Hats and other prominent characters of the 20-year-long One Piece anime, especially as the shadow of the One Piece Remake by Studio WIT looms over the community’s heads.

When the One Piece anime returns, Kimura will likely voice Franky starting in Episode 1123 that will be aired on April 6, 2025.
