On 24 February 2023, The 46th Japan Academy Film Prize revealed the final results of the Popularity Award, and the 15th feature film from the One Piece Franchise, One Piece Film: Red won in the Best Picture Category.
Hokuto Matsumura who voiced Shouta Manakata in Makoto Shinkai’s film Suzume has won in the actor category. He is also Johnny & Associates’ boy idol group SixTONES member.
Both One Piece Film: Red and Suzume are also selected for the Excellent Animation of the Year.
The winners of the awards in each category will be announced at the Awards Ceremony On March 10, 2023. The ceremony will be held at Grand Prince Hotel New Takanawa, Tokyo.
It is the only award among all categories where selection is done by votes of ordinary movie fans and the popularity award was established in the 3rd Japan Academy Film Prize in 1980.
The films eligible for selection were required to be released between January 1, 2022, and December 31, 2022.
Winners were then determined by the votes of listeners of Nippon Broadcasting System’s midnight radio program “All Night Nippon”, where listeners voted for the film and actor that they think “attracted the most attention” in 2022.
