The One Piece remake WILL NOT use AI-generated art for its backgrounds. The art director for the remake, Tomonori Kuroda has been outspoken against the use of AI, even for background work, and believes it’s the wrong approach.

On a Twitter post made in February 22, Kuroda states that the use of AI disregards the interests and dignity of the rights holder and has exhorted other animators and artists to not break their professional ethics even if AI is made legal and commercially available.

Often affiliated with J.C. Staff, Kuroda is a veteran art director, having worked on hit series such as “A Certain Magical Index” and a “Certain Scientific Railgun”, and recently made waves with his involvement in 2021’s “Kiyo in Kyoto: From the Maiko House”.

Previously, WIT has been noted for using AI art as shown in the 2023 anime short “The Dog and the Boy, which used AI background art, with the Netflix production justifying this move due to the lack of manpower.

Because of this instance, some fans speculate that the One Piece remake might still use AI in spite of Kuroda’s influence in the animation process.

The One Piece remake by Studio WIT, the creators of Ranking of Kings, Attack on Titan Seasons 1-3 and Vinland Saga Season 1, has recently announced its staff and revealed some concept art for the show. This remake will begin covering the East Blue Saga and is intended to minimize any major censorships of any dark content found in the original manga.
