DEATH WAS ALWAYS THERE! CHAINSAW MAN PART 2’S BIGGEST TWIST! Chainsaw Man Chapter 198 SPOILERS!
This might be as big as the twist that Makima is the Control Devil and yet it was also a lot harder to spot.

In the previous Chainsaw Man chapter, Fujimoto trolled everyone with the Death Devil, who can only keep dying.
And that stays true, especially with this massive chapter.
Chainsaw Man Chapter 198 is titled, “It’s Fami”.
This chapter has 15 pages.
The chapter begins with the Death Devil…begging for her life?
She tells the fake Chainsaw Man that she has 2,000 yen but the faker says that money is just a government illusion yet the Death Devil says that she does not care about government conspiracies and only wants to save humanity.
The Fake Chainsaw Man calls out the callous method of saving lives: through death and calls the girl the “Death Devil”
As if invoked, the girl stands up, regenerating and declared her intention to save humanity by absorbing life as…
The Famine Devil?
Wait, what?
The girl would go on claiming that this time for sure, she has fully read the Fake Chainsaw Man’s moves
The Fakesaw Man calls for timeout so she could clarify her identity but before Fami could say anything, we see the “real Fami” call for the Falling Devil to bring down her gravity to flatten both parties.
Fami stands on the rails, telling Falling her order, chef’s choice and Falling kills a giraffe and some humans, resulting in a platter of “sauteed human with giraffe”, bringing the Fakesaw Man together with the actual Fami.
The Death Devil apologizes to Fami for using her name and she does this to the Chainsaw Man, who used Chainsaw Man’s name because of the Fire Devil, who was using the Justice Devil’s name.
Neat.
Fami tells the fake Fami to die for the sake of humanity, until she undresses and reveals that she already removed all her internal organs yet she could still not die.
The Death Devil Was in the Details
Fujimoto was incredible at the art of hiding the truth of this massive twist yet at the same time, some will say this had no buildup and may not even have payoff.
Yet this was built up all too well.
The most obvious sign is her signature head tilt and it is so subtle until you realize it resembles someone hanging on a noose.
Her volume cover shows her holding her Devil Hunter’s Club cap to her belly while
She assumes three roles here: the fake human role of a Devil Hunter, the hunger of the Famine Devil, and the longing of the Death Devil to die.
Each part of Fami’s motif hides but also reveals.
She puts her false human identity on her belly as a tell that the Famine Devil was never her real self and she could never overcome her desire to die as her head is always hilting.
As much as she gorges on food, she seems to still lack the enthusiasm and appetite, almost like she was “performing” the part of a connoisseur.
How Fujimoto Built Up the Reveal
We met “Fami” quite early into Part 2 in Chapter 108: “Something Important to Asa” and her first line is a question:
“Do you want to save her?”
The real Fami’s first line in Chapter 195 involves her desire to save humanity.
There is a parallel between Fami’s introduction to this chapter because Asa fought against a “Justice Devil” pawn, Yuko.
Like the Fake Chainsaw Man, Yuko proclaims herself a beacon of hope by killing “bullies”, the same way Fakesaw Man wants to kill devils and all bad guys to be a hero.
A Horseman facing off against a “Justice Devil” pawn, only to meet “Fami”, the Death Devil, pondering on salvation.
It almost brings the questionable role of the Fire Devil full circle.
The Fire Devil, like her master, Death, adopts another Devil’s name as an alias and manipulates the story.
Then that Justice Devil follower seemingly lures out a Horseman and puts them right where “Fami” wants them.
The Death Devil even offers Asa a means to save Yuko’s life.
Somehow, the Death Devil can “save” someone in the opposite way of Famine.
Fami takes life to save it from suffering, that is the long, painful starvation inevitable for humanity when unable to access food or basic amenities.
Here, the Death Devil acts as a “saleswoman” and does not “hide” her identity as the Famine Devil to Yoshida, who had been monitoring her for some time.
Fami is the one to bring up the Great King of Terror from Nostradamus’ prophecies, as well as the signs of its arrival.
However, she is also the mastermind behind the Falling Devil’s emergence, which did not ring any alarm bells that maybe Fami was the one to set up the calamity, not this other character assumed to be the Death Devil.
And let us not forget that the Eternity Devil appeared during Asa and Denji’s Aquarium date.
Her most frequent appearances are in the Aging Devil arc yet but she does not appear when this Primal Devil does.
Of note, to rescue Denji from Public Safety, she uses the Guillotine Devil, which is not tied to hunger outside the motives of the French Revolution but is marketed as the Death Machine, the ultimate form of the modern Death Penalty.
The only other Primal Devil in Part 2 is the Falling Devil, her servant, implying that Fami was not in control of events this time and that she was waiting for other forces (Denji and Yoshida) to take care of Aging.
However, it is interesting that both the Aging Devil and Death Devils have the same motivation, to end their own lives, and they cannot do so without someone else, without Chainsaw Man.
While one, Aging, believes their erasure will ensure humans, whom Aging sees as their “children”, will grow up, the other, Death, wants to die but cannot.
Aging and Eternity, two concepts of long life, are connected to Fami’s agenda.
Oddly, she also does not hide the fact that from the 30 convicts, the other 7 that will not die in July 1999 will actually die much sooner and she was specific about the time, as it was when the Falling Devil made her move.
Or rather, a move the Death Devil made.
This may be an act of fate but it could also be the Death Devil forcing her hand in the situation.
Fami’s last appearance was at start of Chapter 194, where she refuses to ally with Yoshida because they are boring and she only wants to enjoy eating.
However, another interpretation of that is in her words, as she says that
Since the Death Devil borrowed Fami’s name, she might have been the reason Fami is so weak and useless.
Names hold power and it seems that using Fami to hide the power of Death.
Death shows the power to make Devils into dolls and to teleport around, manipulating space.
What if this power is not so much the manipulation of those who hunger in the literal sense but those with desires?
The Justice Devil could probably be another alias the Death Devil borrows or another thematic link to her like Eternity, Aging and the Guillotine Devil are.
After all, heaven and hell are forms of justice humans conceive for victims and oppressors who have not met their just due in this lifetime.
So what is she really doing?
Was she lying about her plan to make the world tremble before Chainsaw Man and War?
Yoru accomplished a key part of that plan by reviving the Gun Devil, the most feared Devil in Part 1 and the symbol of modern warfare, to destroy a large part of a Tokyo city block.
Chainsaw Man erased many concepts in the Aging Devil rampage, on top of the efforts of the Chainsaw Man Church and Fake Chainsaw Man to malign the image of Chainsaw Man and prevent Denji from having a normal life by destroying his family and home.
It seems like Fami never once lied about anything.
The whole time, she wanted a weaponized Chainsaw Man, the lover of the guilt-stricken and truamatized Asa Mitaka, to erase the concept of Death and erase Fami’s suffering.
Fami acts as the main antagonist throughout Part 2 yet not once have we been led to doubt her identity.
However, she makes no effort to hide anything as even though she only used Fami’s name, almost too publicly, to divert everyone’s attention, one little detail, one little inconsistency to her identity, completes the puzzle.
Chainsaw Man Chapter 199 will be released on April 8, 2025.
